Russell Brand Lashes Out at Graham Norton For Bringing Up Katy Perry Divorce

Truth rating: 10

(BBC)

Russell Brand lashed out at Graham Norton after the TV host brought up his divorce from Katy Perry during an interview on Friday.

The comedian, who was on “The Graham Norton Show” to promote Rock of Ages, blasted Norton for bringing up his split while Brand’s mother was in the audience.

He fumed, “My mom is here. She got upset when you dragged up my marriage. I saw her cry, Graham.”

Brand continued, “That’s the reality because it’s real people, Graham, that’s my real mom. I have come here to promote a film and you made my mom cry. I don’t see you as that sort of person, Graham.”

Norton protested that he’d only asked about Perry since she had been on his show the previous week, therefore he would have felt it “weird” to not broach the subject.

But Brand was not appeased by the host’s excuse.

The actor scoffed, “Will people sit and think ‘Oh that’s odd?”

Brand added, “What I would have done, mate, in your position is come up to me before the show and gone ‘Eh, listen it’s a bit odd your ex-missus was on last week. I might mention it, is that OK?

Gossip Cop is working on obtaining video of the exchange.

What do you think about Brand’s angry reaction — was it justified?

That’s rich. This idiot says all kinds of crap about other people, yet thinks he’s off limits? All of those people you talk about have Moms too, a$$ hat.

  • Rebecca

Well, he had no problem bringing it up again and again himself during the MTV award…so I dont really see the problem with someone else doing the same thing really.

  • Lucy

I’ve seen the show on youtube. I don’t recall this conversation…

  • Annabella

You hit it on the head! Agreed!

  • D. Martin

I wish Graham would have thought to tell him that. I wonder what Brand’s reaction would be then?

  • Tricia

I was at the recording of this show and Russell Brand showed his true colours. He weren’t that funny or that pleasant to Emily or Paloma and Graham handled it brilliantly. You can’t have it both ways be a celeb but not be asked about a very big celeb divorce. He was only there to promote his film so considering he was working why take his Mum to work??? Graham did apologise as Russell’s rant was so uncomfortable and cringeworthy and ruined the atmosphere for the rest of the show

  • Catlou9

I agree with Russell – Graham should have asked about mentioning it on the air – just out of respect.

  • Lyn

I don’t understand how this guy can expect that talk show hosts wont ask him about this. Russel has constantly talked about his private life, he has made jokes about his life. When him and Katy where “in love”, he had no problems going on every single talk show and talking about how in love he was and how he was going to be with Katy forever. I don’t see how he can expect not to be asked about any of this now. If your a celebrity that doesn’t want their life talked about then don’t go around talking about your private life to anyone who will listen. If you want privacy then guard what privacy you do have and stop flapping your mouth off about it. No talk show host would ever dream to as Tom cruise about his life because he has made it pretty clear he wont answer any questions about it.

  • Randomlibra

I don’t understand how this guy is famous. What, exactly, does he do besides bad movies?

  • D. Martin

Don’t celebrities have PR people that tell the Talk Show people ahead of time what they can ask about?

  • cinchi

It’s up to Russell to tell the interviewer what’s off limits and if the topic of divorce is a sensitive subject for Russell’s mom, Russell should have given Graham the heads up before the show, not the other way around.

  • D. Martin

See, that’s what I thought too. Don’t they have publicists for that as well?

  • DrLeonardH

Don’t people have any respect for other anymore? Stop looking at him as a comedian and celeb. He is a person that went through something very ruff and maybe if his mother was not in the building he would have shrugged it off. It is not the same to make a joke with no one but non-associated people present versus talking about a hard divorce with people that were hurt by it. You do not see Russell making fun of the holocaust in a room full of 80 year old jews.

  • Seasha

Little bit different don’t you think… I mean the holocaust vs a divorce of a marriage that lasted just over a year. Russell Brand wasn’t publicity shy when he was shouting his love for Katy on every talk show he went on but all of a sudden people are expected pretend it didn’t happen. He went on every tv show he could claiming how in love he was, how he was going to be with her forever, but now he wants his privacy? If you value your private life then keep it just that..private!

  • Jean

What an ugly guy, really ugly!!!. Thanks God Katty is not with him anymore!!!

  • Vanessa

LOL! This guy makes fun of everybody and everything, and people should be sensitive about him. He got served what he usually serves to others.

  • tylerdeen

Talk show hosts most of the times disregard what the PR person says and go ahead anyway and discuss/ask what they want. I have seen this happen many times.. That’s why so many of the guests become pissed off or walk off the show. Some of the guests just sit and do the best they can answering.

  • Woodroad34

Another reason not to see Rock of Ages.

  • Jojo

that didnt happen on the show, paloma faith brought it up and he laughed it off…lies!

i’m with russel on this one – talk show hosts sometimes know no limits, if actor is there to promote movie, ask about movie. movie is not reality show so no need to ask personal questions if person clearly don’t want to talk about it

It’s Brand’s only claim to fame. What else are they supposed to talk about–Arthur?

  • Krissmatt566

Reading the exchange and knowing Russel’s sense if humor, it sounds like he was joking, we’ll see when the show airs.

  • ReplytoLucy

LUCY – you didn’t see it because it was edited out and removed from the t.v. broadcast, so you won’t see it on re-runs or online videos such as YouTube. the thing is Russell Brand jokes around, and its hard to tell if he was kidding or dark humor or what…i mean, if he was serious, Russell would have CLEARLY stated to Graham Norton at the start of the show, you CAN NOT TALK ABOUT KATY PERRY. If you watch the entire interview it was probably uncomfortable since they were talking to the audience about newlyweds and such…plus having your mum in the audience?

  • ReplytoCatlou9

I disagree, Russell should have stated before the interview started he did not want Katy Perry mentioned or else how would Graham know it was off limits.

  • ReplytoKrissmatt566

they cut out that part of the interview, it did not air

  • Kendra

You are comparing Russell and his mother hearing about how he divorced his wife to a room full of Jews hearing about how Jewish people were persecuted and murdered? Interesting.

  • Kendra

I think his mother should put her big girl panties on…Does she cry at the supermarket when she sees a magazine cover with something about the divorce on it? Yes i’m sure it is sad for her but he goes around talking about it in public therefore he should maybe shut his mouth and answer the questions that he is asked, or don’t bring your mother to a talk show where you could be asked about your divorced if she is so traumatized by it. He is such a rude and disgusting person his mother should be embarrassed to have been sitting there watching him.

  • Emma

How pathetic using his mum as an excuse. Especially when Brand dishes out much WORSE personal attacks on other people. I’m sure those people have mothers too. Plus this wasn’t even a personal attack. It was just a question. He was in an interview, its a perfectly normal talk show thing to do to ask about a celebrity divorce. Brand himself was making jokes about it when he hosted the MTV awards. If he didn’t want Norton to bring it up, he should have told him as much, which is what Perry obviously did coz he didn’t ask her.

And when Graham asked Dawn French about her 20+ year marriage ending, she didn’t fly off the handle. She answered the questions graciously. So I think he can handle a couple of questions over his ludicrous 14 month marriage to a pop star…but no apparently not. He had to bring his mother into it. Which above anything else is pure manipulation. How is Graham Norton supposed to say anything back to that without looking like he is attacking his mother? Brand should have at least have the balls to stand on his on two feet and say he didn’t want to talk about it. And do that BEFORE the show next time you tool.
