Russell Brand: “I’d Rather Be A Drug Addict” Than Rich and Famous

Russell Brand makes a startling admission in a new documentary about his troubles with substance abuse.

In the upcoming BBC special, “Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery,” the British comedian watches old footage of himself smoking heroin when he confesses he’s “jealous” of who he was then.

This is when you know it’s a disease. It doesn’t matter that I sat in that flat in Hackney and now I’m in the [upscale hotel] Savoy. I’m jealous of me then,” says Brand.

“It doesn’t make a difference to me. The money, the fame, the power, the sex, the women — none of it. I’d rather be a drug addict,” he continues.

Brand, who has been sober for more than a decade, has made no secret of his drug-addled past, even testifying before Parliament in April about his experiences.

In the documentary, he calls heroin a “greedy drug,” going on to explain how “it’ll take everything” from a person.

“First it’ll take your money,” he describes. “Then it’ll take your friends, your family, your car, your house.”

“Then it’s going to take bits of your body,” he says, adding, “In the end I used to be scoring with people that had eyes missing, limbs missing.”

‘You’ll take it until it takes your life. It’ll take everything until the last thing and you’ll gladly give it that rather than give up the drugs,” he admits.

Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery” will air on BBC Three on August 16.

I applaud him for being honest and straight-forward. His experiences may help other people who are struggling and being open and honest about your drug addiction past helps people overcome their pre-conceived notions about who is and who isn’t an addict. :) Over a decade of sobriety!! A gift from God and yet also a testament to this man’s spirit and will power. So inspiring.

i guess i applaud him for being honest and all, but he can always be both.

as an addict in recovery, i appreciate his honesty. that really is what addiction is like…it’s nice to hear someone with such a platform speak about it. maybe he can save a life or two.

he’s so fugly and bug eyed! WTF DID KATY PERRY SEE IN HIM??!!! Sad, very sad. Maybe one day he will find God and realize what REALLY matters in life. NOT fame and/or drugs!!!!

Before his confession he starts off with “this is why he knows it’s a disease”. His confession is all about talking about how you never really get over the addiction but you learn to resist it. That drug abuse, particularly a drug like heroin, stays with you for life. I don’t think it will help many people already addicted, but hopefully Russell’s honesty will help people who are not already taking the drug to think twice and not take it. People ask what Katy Perry saw in him and I’d venture to guess it was the combination of strength and vulnerability of Russell as a person and his unflinching honesty. Those are rare qualities and frankly admirable.
