“Rogue One” Wins Christmas Weekend Box Office
There was a lot of star power at the movies this Christmas weekend, but the box office force was led by Rogue One. Get the details, and check out the Top 10 below!
As Gossip Cop reported, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had a huge opening last week. The highly-anticipated film is the franchise’s first stand-alone film, and is getting acclaim from critics and fans alike. That continued to power the flick’s box office success. In its second weekend, the movie earned the top spot and $70 million.
Coming on strong, but not strong enough, was the new animated family film, Sing. Featuring the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Hudson and more big names, the musical cartoon took second place with $34 million. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt weren’t such a huge draw for Passengers, as the new space epic had to settle for third with a disappointing $13.2 million. Opening in the number four spot was Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender. The video game adaptation had receipts of $10.6 million, which narrowly edged out Bryan Cranston and James Franco’s Why Him?, which had a fifth place debut.
Rounding out the Top 10 were former chart-topper Moana, which dropped down to sixth place, with a haul of $7.1 million. Securing seventh was the timely Office Christmas Party, which raked in $4.8 million over the holiday weekend. Nabbing eighth was Collateral Beauty, with $3.5 million, while Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them took ninth with $3 million. Just making into the final spot was Manchester By The Sea. It earned $2.9 million.
