Roger Ebert is back!
The legendary film critic will re-launch his movie review show with a new weekly half-hour series on PBS titled, “Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies.”
The program will originate from the public television station WTTW Chicago, where Ebert’s first show began as “Opening Soon at a Theater Near You” in 1975 with the late Gene Siskel. A year later the series was retitled “Sneak Previews,” and went on to become the highest-rated entertainment show in PBS history.
Ebert and Siskel’s program was later syndicated as “At the Movies.”
Not only will “Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies” begin broadcasting again from the Chicago PBS channel, starting January 2011, but it will also be bringing back the show’s copyrighted “Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” format.
The program will be hosted by the Associated Press’ film critic Christy Lemire and former New York Times critic and current NPR contributor Elvis Mitchell.
Ebert, who said the new show is “the rebirth of a dream,” will has a smaller onscreen presence, due to his inability to speak following a bout with cancer.
For a segment called “Roger’s Office,” with the help of a computer voice Ebert will discuss films old and new.
In announcing the new series, Ebert said, “I believe that by returning to its public roots, our new show will win better and more consistent time slots in more markets… I’m happy this show will continue to tell viewers honestly if the critics think a new movie is worth seeing.”
