Rodner Figueroa, a popular Univision host and Emmy winner, was fired for making a racist comment on Wednesday’s “El Gordo Y La Flaca” show, comparing First Lady Michelle Obama to a character in the Planet of the Apes films. Figueroa, who also co-hosted the Spanish-language network’s gossip show, “Sal Y Pimienta,” was discussing how make-up artist and viral sensation Paolo Ballesteros transformed himself to look like a number of famous females, including Michelle Obama, when he made the offending remark (video below).

As photos appeared onscreen of the First Lady and Ballesteros (as Obama), Figueroa said, “Mind you, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of Planet of the Apes, the film.” Immediately, a shocked Raúl de Molina, who hosts “El Gordo Y La Flaca,” tried to diffuse the situation by saying how attractive Obama is. But the damage was done, and Figueroa was fired.

On Thursday, Univision released a statement that read, “Yesterday during our entertainment program ‘El Gordo y La Flaca,’ Rodner Figueroa made comments regarding First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect Univision’s values or views. As a result, Mr. Figueroa was immediately terminated.” Check out the video below of the moment when Figuero made the remark, and share your thoughts.
