Madagascar 3 and Prometheus Beat Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy

BOX OFFICE

(DreamWorks)

The animals and aliens have won again.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted won its second straight weekend, with a $35.5 million take at the box office, while sci-fi thriller Prometheus secured the number two spot with $20.2 million.

That’s bad news for this week’s two new releases.

Star-packed 1980s hair metal musical Rock of Ages opened in third place with $15 million in ticket sales.

And Snow White and the Huntsman came in fourth with $13.8 million.

Nabbing fifth was Adam Sandler’s latest, That’s My Boy, with $13 million.

Rounding out this week’s Top 10 were Men in Black 3 ($9.8 million), The Avengers ($8.4 million), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($2.2 million), art house record-breaker Moonrise Kingdom ($2.1 million), and pregnancy comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting ($1.5 million).

“Snow White and the Huntsman should earn another $13 million for the #5 spot in its third week”

So how much profit did this movie already?

  • Max

Let me guess, more than Bel Ami?

  • Lisa

    Yeah :)

  • Somebody

Bel Ami was only released in selected theaters, also you cannot compare a commercial movie to an indie movie

  • Guest

It never ceases to amaze me that ANYONE buys a ticket to see an Adam Sandler movie. His films aren’t funny, the acting sucks, and are obviously made for people under the age of 8. He is a waste of time and a waste of money……and yet….his films seem to do well. What has this world come to?

  • Anon

SWATH has not yet made a profit, and going by the poor numbers, yes poor no matter however Universal try to spin it, it will not make a profit. It needs to make at least $170 mill at the US box office alone, add in around $80 mill advertising, and it needs to make at least that at the worldwide box office to break even…. well do the math,

Bel Ami is doing poorly at the US box office, but with little P&A costs, add in the early VOD, and what it is making world wide, it’ll eventually turn a small profit which is acceptable for a small indie budgeted at just $11 mill…

Kristen Stewart indie films however have never made a profit, neither will her first post-Twilight studio movie either, by the looks of it. :)

@somebody there are some Indie movies that actually make big money for example 1968′s Rachel Rachel was an indie movie and was Warner brothers/7 arts 5th highest grossing film of the year making 18.85 million at the box office mind you the average ticket price back then was $1.31 while is $7.92 now 44 years later. granted that film had 2 academy award winning actresses in it and they were both nominated for their work in it correct those two actresses are Joanne Woodward & Estelle Parsons who had won best actress in 1958 and best supporting actress in 1967 respectively the films were Three Faces Of Eve & Bonnie & Clyde.

Another Kristen Stewart hater. What did she do to you? Date your boyfriend? Kick your dog?
SWATH has already turned a profit and it has not yet opened in all the countries it is slated to open in.
About her indies, most have turned a profit, do some bloody research before you make stupid comments.

SWATH made back its production costs, it still has to make back its advertising and distribution costs to break even. One estimate has put SWATH needs to make 500 million to do that. You stans need to take the blinders off and the binkies out of your mouths and stop going by the lame come back of “you’re jealous, you’re a hater”. Statements like that say “you’re 12″. People are not going to change their positions when you throw your temper tantrums because everyone is not willing to fawn over your idol.

  • Chloe

You tell’em… I so damn sick of these little girls tempers and name calling, when you don’t like something Kristen says, wears, or her acting. It is always you are a “hater and you want her boyfriend”…Geez! grow the fuck up already.

is rock of ages woth seeing?

  • Lisa

I found this at the robstenation blog

    Domestic: $122,602,000 (Estimate) 49.6% +
    Foreign: $124,600,000 50.4% =
    Worldwide: $247,202,000

@Lisa They got those figures from Box Office Mojo, and I like I said the movie is no where near making a profit yet. It has made it’s ‘production cost’ back with the worldwide box office, rule of thumb a movie needs to make 2-3 times (depending on P&A and other factors) the budget at the box office to break even.

@Guest I do my research, you are the one showing your ignorance. It looks like Kristen fans need to do their research regarding how movies turn a profit, then maybe they won’t be shouting out ‘it’s made a profit!’, when actually no, it hasn’t. Bit embarrassing really.

The info is out there on the internet, anyone can access it.

Rock of Ages…..ROCKS! It is so hilarious and the music is awesome! Who knew that Tom Cruise or Alec Baldwin can sing?? It is a ‘must see’!!

  • Anon

SWATH has not made a profit. The rule is at least double the budget, so it will have to earn $340 million BEFORE it turns a profit. This is the way Hollywood operates. Big budget movies have to make enormous grosses before the investors get a return on their money.

And Stewart’s indies have all flopped. WTTR, The Runaways and TYH didn’t even make back their productions costs, much less a profit. All the figures are at Box Office Mojo, it doesn’t pay to try to lie about them. Even Adventureland didn’t make a profit. OTR is also rotten on RT, and will not make a profit, either.

CINEMA SIGHT is comparing how bad she is with the state of the movies today.
    http://www.cinemasight.com/review-snow-white-and-the-huntsman-2012/

As Snow White, played with too little emotion by Kristen Stewart, comes of age, the queen discovers not only that Snow White is the only person alive who can kill her, Snow’s heart will not only bring her eternal life, but eternal youth and beauty in tandem.

But even the best actors in the film can be seen positively in some way, which cannot be said for the star herself. Apart from forgettable roles in Into the Wild and Adventureland, I haven’t seen Stewart on the big screen. There’s a meme floating around the internet where the various emotions of Kristen Stewart are posed as a single picture with different headings. Amusing for sure, but not until now have I really understood just how pinpoint accurate those assessments are.

From her first scene, holed up in her prison cell, there’s a lifeless, mechanical quality to her performance. Every emotion from awe to fear to sadness is delivered with the same wide-eyed, mouth-ajar gaze that is too frequently captured in close-up. The most alive her character feels is when she’s lying dead on her bier as Hemsworth’s Huntsman mourns over it. It would be easy to say that the film fails because of the horrendous miscasting and might have been better with any number of better young actresses.

  • Just Wondering

I guess I don’t get your point. Do you report numbers on all movies or just Kristen’s movies? If you dislike her why do you care? I mean there are a few actors that I don’t enjoy in movies but I just change the channel or don’t go see their movies. Seems odd that for a actress you don’t seem to care for you sure spend a lot of time on and doing research on her. I couldn’t tell you any numbers on the actors movies that I dislike cause I don’t really care, I couldn’t even tell you half the movies they are in

  • aquarius64

I went on the link and read the review. Wow. Pretty harsh.

And don’t you just love it when the stans try to Jedi-mind trick you into believing you have a mental or emotional problem when you raise a criticism about their idol, especially when you bring in quotes or figures to support your argument? They treat the board as if it’s a fan site where only glowing praise is supposed to be posted, not a forum where different opinions are permitted.

  • Just Me

Personally I am interested in box office numbers, film, how it all works. Which is why I clicked on this link in the first place. I am also interested in journalism, how stories can be spun, public relations etc. I was just adding to the conversation and presenting a different take on the numbers. You know, this being a public forum, open to discussion and differing opinions…

  • Just Wondering

Like I said just curious as to why there was so much time invested but if that is your thing, I get it cause it could be very interesting if you look the whole industry. Just wondered why the hostile stance in general on the board over people none of us know, who don’t care about us and in general we shouldn’t care about (other than if we spend our time and money watching). And before the other person needs to pop a Xanax, I don’t idolize movie stars, I just don’t see the point because they don’t change my daily life in any way good or bad. But hey just my opinion, we all have them and are all entitled to them.

  • Just Me

Oh I agree, people can just take things too far. By the way, there is another ‘Anon’ on here that posted the review, interesting, but I’m not into petty fandom squabbles. (I have tried changing my name but it didn’t seem to work)

Numbers are very interesting, MIB for example is going to lose a tonne of money at the US BO, yet studios will still finance $200 mill plus movies. Disney tried to cut back on The Lone Ranger, but that has gone way over budget, it’ll be interesting to see what that does at the BO.

Independent cinema are now taking their movies to VOD, cuts cost for P&A and they get a larger percentage from VOD providers. However then you are not getting the cinema experience. It’s all down to money sadly.

Probably not that interesting to most people, but I find it all quite fascinating.

  • Linda

SWATH is not a flop. It’s made $247,000 worldwide so far. It may not turn a profit for Universal but as far as movies go it certainly isn’t a flop. And why are you so obsessed with Kristen Stewart anyway? You obviously comment negatively about her on the other threads as well. I don’t like Adam Sandler but I wouldn’t waste my time researching and commenting on him.

  • Linda

These people are just plain obsessed with Kristen Stewart.

  • Linda

You’re the one who has a sick and jealous obsession with Kristen Stewart. What’s wrong – you can’t handle the fact she’s dating Rob Pattinson?

  • Linda

Oh bullshit. You’re only interested in Kristen’s box numbers.

  • Just Me

Linda, you need to calm down. Not everything revolves around Kristen Stewart.

  • mlj

I agree. I saw it yesterday and thought it was great! Fun stuff!

  • Phweston0269

Any coments on box office returns are premature at best. Many domestic *flops* make a ton of money overseas. If you are really interested, wait until those results are in. Then fight about it!
