10:50 am, September 4th, 2010
Robert Schimmel, the controversial but beloved comedian, has died from injuries suffered in a car accident on August 26.
He was 60.
Known for his outrageous material and a personal life marked by illness and tragedy, Schimmel was a frequent Howard Stern guest and appeared regularly on shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “The Daily Show.”
He was also a writer for “In Living Color,” released several comedy albums and starred in specials on HBO and Showtime.
In recent years he incorporated into his comedy a prolonged battle against cancer, a subject on which he also wrote a book. Earlier this year he announced that he was ailing with Hepatitis C and cirrhosis.
Schimmel’s 19-year-old daughter was driving him and his 11-year-old son when she swerved to avoid an accident, causing their vehicle to roll over on an Arizona freeway.
Neither child was critically hurt.
