Robert Pattinson Paparazzi Showdown Sensationalized

(GettyImages.com)

Backlash is as much a part of celebrity as well-rehearsed stories for Leno and Letterman. Some spectators consider it the price of admission. If an attractive young man or woman wishes to make millions of dollars in the public eye, they say, he or she must expect that public eye to turn away from time to time — or even glare.

And so it is that everything becomes amplified beyond recognition. If a movie fails, the leading actress is buried by the press and on message boards. If she’s been the subject of unflattering tabloid stories, she can expect to land on Worst Dressed Lists or in Chelsea Handler‘s quips. We can’t wait for the too-smug actor to get his comeuppance, or to be caught scratching himself on TMZ.

When momentum is in someone’s favor, we conveniently overlook flaws. When we wish to rip them down, no fissure is too small.

The problem is: The media often portray events as they didn’t happen, in order to fit the narrative their readers been instructed to follow.

Robert Pattinson — like hundreds of other famous people — is hounded relentlessly by paparazzi. Surprisingly, just like everyone else, he doesn’t care for it.

Some celebs have handled their frustration with violence.

Others scream and carry on.

It’s not the best route to go, and it surrenders some of the moral high ground to the predatory photographers.

X17Online.com is pretending that Robert Pattinson made similar mistakes when pestered by paparazzi over the weekend. He supposedly “yells” at a photog after committing a “hit & run.” He got “pissy,” sneers the site.

It’s a total misrepresentation.

There’s no hitting and running. There’s no yelling. There’s no prima donna hissy fit. He barely even raises his voice.

Pattinson looks frustrated and exhausted, and he repeatedly — politely — asks the paps not to follow him. The outlet even provides video of the incident, and it shows Pattinson being completely civil.

You can even hear a photographer praising Pattinson as “such a nice guy.”

X17 asks viewers to ignore what they see in favor of a more dramatic, sensational confrontation. Consider that Pattinson is literally forced to pull off the California Pacific Highway to ask for some privacy and to ask nearby police officers (presumably) whether they can help. When the harassment begins, it’s still light outside. By the end, it’s dark. It’s ridiculous.

Yet X17 wants the takeaway message to be: If Pattinson can’t handle harassment, he shouldn’t be a celebrity. And if he does handle himself like a gentleman, just misrepresent events to make it look like he didn’t.

Shameful.

This was extremely shameful. I am so disgusted with the paps right now. I can’t believe there is no law to assist people like Rob from getting this type of harassment. It’s disgusting.

  • Breeze27

Papz are so self-righteous in their judgements, they are disgusting. I don’t know how they can look themselves in the mirror without puking. Not only do they aggressively stalk celebs, they say all sorts of awful/invasive things just to try and get a reaction out of whomever they are stalking. I hope paparazzi laws change so the extent in which they hunt down stars will diminish at least a little bit. And to top that all off, they make up complete BS or twist things just to get stupid stories. They are complete a$$holes.

  • chris101

What I saw on that video amounts to stalking. How is this not illegal? Can someone please explain why it’s lawful to harass someone in America? I don’t understand.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kim-Dawson/749160745 Kim Dawson

Rob is one of the few celebrities in Hollywood who actually has a right to get mad at the paps. He clearly doesn’t invite them into his life (unlike other celebs) and yet they follow him anyway. Rob is a class act and I’m glad he stood up to them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shannon-Moore-Rose/1360348077 Shannon Moore Rose

Rob could sue these bastards for libel! X-17 states he hit 2 cars and left the scene….B.S.! Where is there proof? Where is that video? I am so sick of these scum having to take no responsibility. Unless a “celeb” is doing a press junket or movie premier, I feel they are private citizens. Private citizens do not get stalked and have cameras shoved in their faces and be shouted at and provoked into a reaction. It’s sickening, evil and wrong. If something isn’t done soon, there will be another tragedy. Anyone old enough to remember Diana?

  • Briana

The most ludicrous thing is that they make up such blatant lies in their article, and then act as if their video evidence backs it up, when it fact it does the exact opposite and completely counters it. He wasn’t ‘out of control’, he didn’t fight with anybody, he didn’t even raise his voice. He asked them repeatedly, calmly to stop following him because he didn’t want them to find out where he lived. And that is a right that everyone deserves, no matter who you are.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/LeeAnne-Egelston/675379414 LeeAnne Egelston

I am so upset by what the paps did to him. Makes me sick. The first amendment is taken to extremes and it is ridiculous. I believe it should be revised – there are laws against stalking which is what this basically boils down to and because they are a celebrity their civil liberties are being trampled all over. The cops can’t do anything because they are not touching him, but come on!! It is harassment, plain and simple. No wonder so many celebs have attacked the paps, broken their cameras, etc etc – loved it when Kristen gave them the finger in OZ. I don’t live in their shoes but by god, if someone followed me 24/7 and tried to snap my most private moments or even the most mundane thing I did, I would lose it.
Rob could sue, he’s entitled to. But unfortunately it won’t do any good. Even after the death of Princess Diana, it didn’t stop. Who else needs to die before these freaks quit stalking and harassing human beings who just happen to be famous because they makes movies and/or music?

  • BeReal

X17 is low in every way to some celebs. They have some celebs that they don’t bother at all. So for them to say that if they can’t handle harassment that they shouldn’t be a celebrity, is totally misleading.

  • Kitty Cullen

X17 is scum. I think Rob learned a very hard lesson today – his celebrity status is now such that he cannot go anywhere alone, especially not in the scum capital of the world. I seriously doubt that he will ever try to go anywhere again without a full contingent of big, buff bodyguards and a huge entourage to shield him. The scumbags who were bullying him, and that’s what they are, bullies, better capitalize on their ill gotten gains from today cuz they will never get at him like that again. Sad, so sad. I hope Rob knows that every single fan who, against their better judgement and who were ashamed of themselves for doing it (me) watched that sickening video, wishes we could have been there to teach those scum some manners.

  • Kitty Cullen

Oh and thanks Gossip Cop for setting the record straight – you’re the best.

  • Maguilita

When, if any time… When has that ridiculous site made sense or even told the truth?…
And I swear that page has a virus attached or something… A looooooong time ago, I was seeing some Paris Hilton (don’t ask) pictures there, and my mac got fuzzy and frozen after… Hope now it’s not like that… Not a chance I’m going there! Any reason!

Anyway, back to Robert… GOD I AM ANGRY!… >:-/… *counts to 10, till calmed down a bit*… This is chasing, stalking, harassing… Really… If the situation was that long as for going front daytime into dark, this wasn’t just a pap moment… And if he asked the cops to do something, was because he felt harassed and as far as I know, police gets involved in that… I really hope some of these stalkerazzi were arrested or guided away or something (but you don’t mention it, so I doubt it happened, and it surprises me… What kind of police is that?)…

This man, Robert Pattinson has TOO MUCH PATIENCE… really, he couldn’t be more polite in every situation he is in… Really really high class!… :)… He’s polite and educated all the time!… For God’s sake, it’s not like he is yelling at them, pushing them, or doing gesture…
Is asking to leave him alone too much?… Take your picture and leave… But such chasing is disgusting… Repulsive!
Give him a break, seriously… I’m sure he was angry and frustrated… and that really leaves a bad taste behind… :(… I don’t want to see him like that…

    Thanks GC!… :)
    Really like your commentary…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cherry-Lee-Northey-Mason/1607515631 Cherry Lee Northey Mason

Thank you for the true story. I totally agree with Maguilita If you have to , take your picture and leave, but such chasing is disgusting and repulsive.

  • crmomof2

The sad part in all of this is that more people will read and see the sensationalized version. All celebrities not just Rob have been under siege by the paparazzi. The way that he was followed was not only invasive but it was dangerous not only to Rob but to others that are driving on the same highways, etc. They will do anything to get a photo that someone will pay good money for. Every one criticized Kristen when she flipped the bird to the paparazzi in Australia, but I am sure that she was provoked. These people are relentless and will stop at nothing to get a photo of these celebrities and their families.

Pattinson is not the only celebrity that has tried this tactic, George Clooney for example tried to get them to back off.
I thought that there was a law passed in California with regard to this activity. Why can’t this extreme behavior on the part of the papz be curtailed?

  • crmomof2

I really liked your commentary, Gossip Cop.

  • CindyC

absolute -a- holes Leave Rob alone He is never anything but gracious and nice but I guess its the paps and you will never win against those P!#*S!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laura-Gobis/1518067089 Laura

NEW Laws have to be passed. There is no other way to keep these leeches at bay. I dont understand why celebs dont get together and fight for new laws? What makes me sick is the cops did NOTHING. That is BS, these are human beings for gods sake and as a human being Rob was in tilted to protection. Since when if someone becomes a celeb they are just fresh meat for the media and paps? I dont get it.

    NEW LAWS PEOPLE.

  • pembroke

This artical filled me with dread. Watching the video braught back memories of Princesse Diane, she too was hounded by the papatazzi and we are all know to what end. A gentleman from the top of his head to th tip of his toes Rob showed a restraint very few could achieve,As both a fan and a fellow Brit I am so very very proude of him. I am also in agreement with the dissappiontment felt by others at the lack of response displayed by the police officers(does wounders for publice relations!). The only way to stop situations like this is to stop the demand for the pictures they take and with Rob being such big news this isn’t going to happpen. But I plead with them please give the poor lad a break he is only human,

  • MissZee

it’s getting bad i think…paps are wayyyy out of control and there’s no rules or laws for them to abide by…will a celeb have to die by a pap for people realize how serious and dangerous this could be?…did anyone forget about what happened to Princess Diana?

  • davetoro

This is a very sad thing to watch, it is a thoughtful, articulate, normal person being subjected to something that they do not want. The fact that he has the control to not raise his voice, and his determination to not give the paps what they want – either where he lives, or a reaction be it physical or a comment he would regret, should be applauded. Many other celebs, more experienced with these people, would dream to have his self-control in front of such abuse.

Watching the video, they tell him they will not follow him. He asks them to leave on several occasions, and clearly the video shown on the site is the closest they got to their bogus story of a “hit and run” or “yelling”. At no point does he speak any louder, of which I’m really impressed. They also taunted him as well by shielding their faces and running around him, they tried to mock him as well by pretending they were on his side when the fan was there, calling him a nice guy and saying they were Team Edward. He looked completely dejected, but held his nerve enough to talk to the fan, even though he wished he could be anywhere else.

I’m sure that a lot can be done to curb what is essentially a virus on these people’s lives. Although we all want to see them about and know what they are doing, do 5,6, or 7 people really need to be there to capture a moment. Actors such as Robert Pattinson should be allowed to share however much of their lives as they want with whoever he wants – i’m sure he would share more if he had the ability to do so without the threat of being exploited by these people. Some above have raised the memory of Princess Diana. As I come from England, I can tell you that she was one of, if not the most loved of all the country, she was adored. But when she tragically died, the months of invasive media intrusion was rightly blamed for how she had to lead her life, running around, going out the back door of hotels, restaurants (sound familiar?)

If the Californian government had any metal about them, they would not need anyone to come to harm before they consider protecting those who, by this video, ask for it but do not receive it

  • MissZee

also, if you see at the end of the video on that website…he wasn’t even in the drivers seat

  • KateWinterman

Of course Gossip Cop can’t help but to put something Kristen Stewart related in a story about Robert Pattinson.

“And so it is that everything becomes amplified beyond recognition. If a movie fails, the leading actress is buried by the press and on message boards. If she’s been the subject of unflattering tabloid stories, she can expect to land on Worst Dressed Lists or in Chelsea Handler’s quips.” As Kristen was the lead in the bomb “The Runaways” and recently mocked by CH, this is about her.

Please get off the Robsten train and recommit to doing what you claim to do.

Otherwise, I have to agree that this harrassment should be illegal. If it happened to an ordinary citizen, that person could get protection, but even the law seems to feel that celebrities deserve this treatment as a condition of their fame and fortune and that should NOT be tolerated.

  • befair

Rob.p. is a gentle and gracious man who just doesn’t want to reveal every details of his life to everyone. It’s a pity that in our society these qualities are not been respected. And seems he has no choice but to sue these paps. It might stop them if they find out they are going to suffer financially

  • Jessica97

I’m afraid to watch the vid, I can’t stand looking at a papz pic or vid. It makes me feel like scum myself. Poor Rob, I just want to give him a hug:(

  • amy

To anyone who saw the video of Rob being HARASSED by the Paparazzi and wants to help stop them…Please go to http://www.petitiononline.com/rpct1305/petition.html & sign this petition…Also go to http://www.paparazzi-reform.org/ to see how we can help!!

  • Lauren

Thank you for writing the truth. It saddens me that even the cops did not help him and allowed the paps to continue harrasing and stalking him. But I have to say I am so proud of Rob for being such a gentleman in such a trying circumstance and he handled the situation with grace without stooping down to their level. I am so glad I could always count on Gossip Cop to report the truth.

  • MissZee

in all honesty, I think Rob could have knocked a few out lmao but he is such a gentleman and what he did was right…he walked away. although he was frustrated and extremely pissed off, he didn’t let out his rage in a violent way.

  • amy

To anyone that wants to email Gov Schwarzenegger about this…(I mean he is the one that signed this new anti paparazzi Law)…email him at http://gov.ca.gov/interact
I think all of Rob’s fans need to atleast try and do something!!

  • evamania

‘d be good to be left alone … I love rob. ‘d be nice to come to know the love Argentina

  • robsessed1986

I have seen the video and pics on X17 and I don’t see any evidence of Rob being “out of control”. Thank you Gossip Cop for setting things straight! Rob is a human being not a circus side show. He deserves some privacy. I don’t blame him for trying to get rid of the paps. He did not want them to follow him to his temp. residence. There is nothing wrong with that. I think that fans should band together to go and stalk the paps day and night for a week just to let them know how these celebs feel. Rob is a fabulous and very gifted actor and musician. And he has said numerous times that the only thing he doesn’t like about our country is the paps following him everywhere. I am a proud American. I believe in the Consitution of our great country. That is what makes it so great. Even non-Americans are given these rights. That includes Rob. I understand that these paps are doing their jobs, putting food on the table, etc. However, I believe that Rob and other celebs give these people plenty of time to get their pics and then ask to be left alone. There is nothing wrong with that. There is no excuse for the way these paps were treating Rob. I believe all these pics and videos show Rob being his usual friendly, patient, gentlemanly self. He had enough. I don’t blame him.
I have heard that Rob, Rachel Weisz, and Hugh Jackman will be coming to New Mexico soon to film “Unbound Captives”. I can’t wait to show him and the other celebs how hospitable and friendly New Mexicans are. We may ask for pics and autographs but, we leave them alone after that and do not invade their privacy. Just ask Julia Roberts, Lance Armstrong, Kevin Costner, Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Richard & Kyle Petty, Harrison Ford and the countless other celebs who either live in our great state of New Mexico or visit, film movies, race in our prestigeous bike race, etc.
I will visit the web site listed in another comment and sign their petition against these so-called paparazzi.

  • robsessed1986

I too am reminded of Lady Diana. And what a lady she was. I don’t want to see Rob or any other celeb injured or killed because of these so-called paps. I read a lot of these comments. I really like the ones from the “Brits”. England should and rightly is proud of Robert Pattinson. He is a true genleman and seems very respectful. His parents did a great job!! He remained calm and respectful under tremendous pressure from these paps. I think the police should have done something to protect him. Shame on those officers who did nothing!! These paps could have caused an accident.
I wanted to point out that, in that video, when the lady fan went up to Rob’s car and spoke to him, I saw him smiling at her. Talking to her in his usual polite manner. I heard something about him not wanting to give her an autograph. I don’t think I believe that part either. She seemed to be very pleased with Rob and the short conversation they had. She was smiling, too. Can you believe that!!?? Rob was so upset with the paps and “out of control” that he was smiling and politely talking to a fan. WHAT A GREAT GUY!! That is why I am ROBSESSED!! Could there ever be a better person to be a fan of? WELL DONE ROB!! WHAT A TRUE GENTLEMAN!!

  • Francie

I, too, am outraged that Rob — and any celebrity for that matter – can be stalked, taunted, harassed by Paps at will – to the point that many undoubtedly feel threatened, vulnerable, exhausted, violated. How can we sit by and allow those who give us so much entertainment to be subjected to such treatment? It’s one thing if they are on a press junket, but quite another when they are trying to live some semblance of a personal life.

The current legislation has no teeth — even if it was revised recently. It essentially says that as long as the Paps don’t physically harm the celebrity (or trespass on the celebrity’s property) — anything goes! Supposedly the legislation protects “freedom of the press” — sure — Paps are journalists now???? Hardly. To my mind, they are scum — lowlifes who have no dignity or respect for anyone. How could anyone consider making their living that way…

Thanks to Amy for the suggestions and links on how to effect change to rein in the Paparazzi. It’s all fine for us to comment and convey our outrage, but it would be better if that turned in to action.

Go to http://www.paparazzi-reform.org and write your comment in the comments section (no sign-in required). Email the Governor at gov.ca.gov/interact and tell him you want stronger legislation that prohibits the paps from trailing and harassing celebrities.

And I really like robsessed1986′s idea — “I think that fans should band together to go and stalk the paps day and night for a week just to let them know how these celebs feel.” It just takes somone in LA to organize it!

And let’s not buy the rags or go to the website that employ Paps. If the story is “news”, mainstream media will pick it up — then it might be worth reading.

Thankfully, Rob has control, class and manners — something the Paps could take a lesson from!

  • Janie

Appreciate your site!!! and your take on stuff! BRAVO! :) Yeah, truly RPattz is too large of a star to go out and about in that paparazzi infested arena without a plan and a few big bruts. Maybe someday things will chill. Things wont let up now, and certainly not in that region. Hello!? — Summit?! Who runs the “street smarts” department? Call Sean Penn for some guidance, would you? .

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Beryl-Ebdon/100000221001817 Beryl Ebdon

Poor Rob, he is to much of a gentleman to be abusive to the paps, why don’t they respect him by leaving him alone instead they just hound him, he must be sick of it ,their excuseis if he doesn’t like the attention, he shouldn’t be an actor !!!!!!!!!what a load of rubbish that is, I wonder if the boot was on the other foot …..how they would feel ..being stalked all the time. There should be a law in the states against stalking celbs ……we have one over here in the u.k…..to much stalking anyone ..not just celbs …means a court case …….so come on america ..get your act together …….get that law out and give ROB a break……

  • MissZee

i dont want to make fun of this but i think the best place for him to hide from paps when he gets away from them so head to an Amish town

  • stelange

i dont understand why the cops didnt even ask those papz to distance themselves. when is the right time to interfer or assist in this kind of situation? when he was down and bloodied already? i believe these cops should be reported and inform their superior of their incompetence. im sure they are now ashamed because they were caught refusing to assist and their faces are in the news stated – the cops who refused to help. even ordinary people when somebody needs assistance good samaritan would lend a hand. why cant they?

  • robsessed1986

Well, I’m glad someone liked my idea. Anyway, looks like Rob will only get some rest when he is not in LA or NY. Quite a few fans showed up to watch Rob film WFE today in Georgia. They’ve been camped out for a couple of days. They say they won’t stalk him, they just want to see him. I hope they keep that promise. When Rob was in Budapest filming Bel Ami, fans were very quiet and would tell off anyone who would raise their voice. As a reward, they got to be closer to the set and Rob even said thanks to them. Rob said he really liked filming there because of the respect fans had for him by not being loud and obnoxious. We could learn from them.
As for the paps, more than likely, there will never be a law that keeps them from doing what they do. First Amendment and all. Like I said before, I am a very proud American, I beleive in the Constitution of our great Nation however, everyone in this country has rights. Even those who are not natural citizens. Rob has a right to be happy. When he’s happy, I’m happy. And right now, for him, I’m not happy. These so-called paps give us Americans a bad name. Please Rob, Please don’t judge the rest of us for what they do.
Everyone is right, Rob is a true gentleman and will not lower himself to the paps level. GOOD FOR YOU ROB!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Meganina-Neely/1515570375 Meganina Neely

I find this article and the one that you did about Taylor and his new “love” to be rather funny. Here you are giving the papz crap for following around this dude that everyone stalks, when it is the paps who have thus far provided you with “proof” that he and kstew are dating! Now you are giving a story about how the papz and magazines have a tendency to over dramatize and want you to see something that really isn’t there. Ha what a laugh, KStew herself said that in an interview in the 2009 Comicon, the pictures you see of her and Rob are usually just looked at the wrong way…aka as you just said the way the media (cough…which you are part of…) wants you to look at them. And while I am at it lets look at your article saying that Taylor’s new co-star wouldn’t just up and ditch her boyfriend of one year for a dude she just met and is working with. If that is the case then why in the heck do you think it wouldn’t be any different for Kstew and RPattz? Everyone just seemed to be happy to believe, including you people, that she just happily dumped her boyfriend of…what…3ish 4ish years? All you people are hypocrites who have fallen into that media trap that they tried to set with these unfortunate photos. Yeah it sucks this has to happen to the dude but you guys only make it worse by buying into it from the start, so of course the paps think they can get away with it.

  • robsessed1986

    Meganina Neely,
Wish I would have read this a long time ago. You are right about some fans buying into the whole “Robsten” thing. I keep telling everyone that as long as they keep buying into this crap, the paps will keep harrassing Rob. The truth as I see it is that there are only pics of Rob and KS that really show nothing, as far as a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, they show just enough to leave it to the imagination. Believers say yes, non-believers say no. None of us are willing to agree. I don’t care who Rob or KS date. I just get upset, as an obvious Rob fan, because as long as these fans keep buying into this crap paps will harrass Rob. They could cause him harm. I don’t want that. Imagine how all these fans would feel if Rob were injured or even killed in a car accident while being chased by the paps.

  • Renee33

I think the papparazzi should hound Robert day and now. Robert has no talent so he deserves to be miserabale. Robert has committed crimes fpr which he doesn’t want to take responbility for. He went rabid dog on the papparazzi and the papparazzi didn’t deserve it their fans and think it’s funny. He’s a major druggie and shouldn’t be allowed in this country. Robert go home and let England not hire you.
