What is your point? Someone already said that you can not compare either Belamy or Cosmopolis to SWATH. Universal put millions of dollars into that movie. It was set up to be a blockbuster much like any other block buster movie coming out this summer. Most of them are doing well so far. Madigasgar took the lead this weekend in the U.S, but that does not mean SWATH is not holding its own. All this comparing is nonsense. With all the fantastic reviews Rob has received for Cosmopolis, and the 6 projects he already has lined up, he doesn’t need to worry about anything. Cronenberg said Rob has become one of his favorite actors and they are working together again on Maps to the Stars. The film did well in France and other places in Europe, and it will do well when it opens in the US in August.

He’s a man, he’s free to enjoy looking at boobs if he wants to, he’s not married or engaged. His brain has and talent has got him enough jobs lined up to keep him busy for the next two years, unlike some of his co-stars who’s movies get bad reviews and never make a profit. As for SWATH, it doesn’t matter if it makes $200, it would still be considered a failure because it cost over $170 million to produce, and it has to make double that amount before it turns a profit. Only making $200 million is not enough to be considered a success.

They may make a sequel but not because Swath was a hit, only because they think they could make more money on a second movie focusing on Charlize or Hemsworth. It won’t start Snow White, she’s already proved she can’t make a film be profitable. The other characters were more interesting than she was and they will be the stars of a sequel.

There’s a meme floating around the internet where the various emotions of Kristen Stewart are posed as a single picture with different headings. Amusing for sure, but not until now have I really understood just how pinpoint accurate those assessments are.

From her first scene, holed up in her prison cell, there’s a lifeless, mechanical quality to her performance. Every emotion from awe to fear to sadness is delivered with the same wide-eyed, mouth-ajar gaze that is too frequently captured in close-up. The most alive her character feels is when she’s lying dead on her bier as Hemsworth’s Huntsman mourns over it. It would be easy to say that the film fails because of the horrendous miscasting and might have been better with any number of better young actresses.

Like it’s lead, Snow White and the Huntsman is beautiful on the outside, but hollow and emotionless on the inside. Stewart has inadvertently become symbolic of all that is wrong with the film. And not just the film, but the industry as a whole. For years, studios have been focused heavily on finding the most mind-numbing projects to shepherd before its doting audiences, hoping to squeeze every last cent from a public that has been growing less discerning as each year passes.

Stewart could easily be the figurehead of a movement, thus explaining why she was the perfect selection for a film as blatantly money-hungry as this.

@Wtf: your several openings are in fact 5 countries: Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Venezuela and Japan, and for Japan there is still no release date. You can find it on the official SWATH-site. Do you think the film can earn the same amount it earned by now in those countries left? You could go and work somewhere in the economy with the ability to predict things – you would be a hit ;-)
A film that costs $ 170 million in production (without the promotional costs) has to earn much more than $200 million before you can even think about any kind of profit.
Let´s talk 1-2 months after the film was released worldwide and then you can claim it being a hit and that it made a profit. As long as you subtract all the cost and nothing is left you cannot speak about anything being profitable. That´s simple math and the way everything in the economical world works, no matter if it is a film, a company or simply selling cars…
And no, I am not a hater or whatever you think that people are who voice a different opinion. I am just doing the same as everybody here – speaking my mind. And a sequel does not equal with being profitable. It could be the contrary: desperately trying to sell more crap than anybody really needs (and I am not only speaking about a certain film)

Hmmm, Dana21 how funny you are on here asking the impact of Robsten on my and other Robstens daily lives when maybe you should be asking yourself that same question… You come on here reading the comments and respond so… Unlike nonstens the information Robstens have come from Rob and Kristen themselves. We don’t pick and choose the comments R/K say or take them out of context to fit our theories like the nonstens do. The fact that everyone who knows Rob and Kristen from producers, directors, co-stars, etc., talk about and acknowledge them as a couple speaks volumes too, so do we have the ultimate knowledge- no Rob and Kristen do- but we have the ability to read and comprehend.

WTF?! You have the nerve to ask someone if they live with or know Rob and Kristen because the information they give has always been correct? I’ve researched things that Buffy has posted and she is always right. There was a post, she had gotten the event mixed up with another and she posted a correction for it, so when I see post from Buffy, I have no doubt in her credibility. When has Buffy o any other Robsten tried to convince anyone that they have the ultimate knowledge? Just because they can back up their claims, and take the time to check things out before posting them, does not mean they are trying to convince anyone of anything. Does Buffy and other Robsten fans posting about Rob and Kristen impact your daily life??

SWATH update. Woldwide box office total is 247.2 miliion. France, Russia, Italy and Belgium totals have NOT been added yet. SWATH is without a doubt a hit.

You can keep telling yourself that SWATH is a hit, but films that don’t make a profit aren’t considered to be hits. The number it has to reach is $340 million, $220 is nothing in terms of profit. It doesn’t suddenly become profitable at $200 million.

Educate yourself before you make yourself look even more foolish.

Rob and Kristen live together. They also have the same circle of friends. You are proof that it’s not Kristen fans or Robsten fans that start the Rob cheating rumors. Rob and Kristen are very much together, and Kristen has gone to Australia for the premiere of SWATH.

And as soon as she leaves town he goes to a bar with 2 women. There’s a blond next to him in the booth.

I’m sure he has lots of male friends, but this isn’t the first time he’s been seen in bars with girls in LA. Last August/September there were a couple of sightings of him at bars with women, and then he was photographed with the actress Sarah Roemer last November. These nights out with random girls are adding up and he’s looking more and more single every day since Cannes. Maybe this story was right after all.

Don’t ever expect Rob to announce that he’s single. He probably thinks people will get the message if he’s seen out enough with other women. Some people don’t need a brick house to fall on them before they get the message.

There is a distressing trend in film criticism. You can see it from the smallest blogs to the biggest newspapers. We’re living in the snark ages.

“Snark” is an internet neologism. I don’t know if it is in the OED but, if not, it will be soon. It’s a combination of “snide” and “remark”, and refers to making sardonic or sarcastic comments for the amusement of yourself and similarly minded members of your audience. It’s the attitude adopted by faux-apathetic teenagers who slouch at the back of the classroom.

But it has escaped high-school cliques and infected film criticism, where, increasingly, the aim is not to write a review of a film but an amateur-night stand-up routine about it. There are many honourable exceptions, and inexcusably snarky reviews are far more prevalent online than in print, but overall the rise of the snarks is undeniable.

I often receive emails from aspiring film critics either asking to contribute to a publication I am editing or simply seeking advice. A great many of these contain variations of the sentence, “I think I am a good writer and that I have the right snarky sense of humour to be a film critic”, as if a film critic is by definition a jaded, uninspired insult merchant.

One email even linked to its author’s “takedown of Paul Blart: Mall Cop”, a piece that had been posted about three months after that movie was released, which is to say about two months after it was forgotten.

An entire generation of film critics – or at least of those who would like to be film critics – seems to believe that the highest aim of film criticism is to crack wise about a movie that isn’t worth anyone’s attention.

Whenever I raise this point, I’m given the default answer: “It’s just laziness. It’s always easier to make silly comments than it is to write something meaningful.” The second part of this is true: it is always easier to make silly comments than it is to write something meaningful, which is why if you can’t write something meaningful you shouldn’t write anything at all.

But the first part is false: it is not just laziness that compels critics to do it. Most of the critics who trade in snark are not professionally compelled to review dozens and dozens of films whether they wish to see them or not.

Especially online, many critics can write largely about whatever they choose. So those critics, or critics-in-the-making, who opt to produce snark-ridden “takedowns” of Paul Blart: Mall Cop are actively choosing to write unamusing drivel about unamusing drivel. If they were just lazy, they’d simply write nothing.

Film critics were once quality-assurance officers, checking everything that rolled off the production line and giving their opinion on whether it was fit for consumption. The biggest film critics, those on staff at the major newspapers, magazines and websites, still have a role like this: they watch every major film just before it is released and write a review that, in essence, argues whether readers should or should not pay to see it that weekend.

But any critic who isn’t working in that capacity, which is to say the giant majority of those who write film criticism whether as professionals, semi-professionals or amateurs, should work to a different model.

Thousands of films are now released every year. In 2011, Roger Ebert, the greatest and hardest-working film critic we will ever see, reviewed 292. This was the most he had ever reviewed in any year since he became a critic in 1967. But I’d wager it was also one of the smallest fractions of all the films released worldwide in a single year that he had ever covered.

There now are so many movies being made, and so many ways to find and watch them – 24-hour film channels on television, internet streaming, downloads, DVDs, Blu-rays and, lest they seem an afterthought, cinemas – that the viewer is overwhelmed.

Never has earnest critical guidance been more necessary. Today’s film critics should be truffle pigs, unearthing the undiscovered delights buried among the mass of mediocrity and rubbish.

There is no point in a thousand bloggers each reviewing the major studio releases of the week or, even worse, just choosing whichever one of them is least exciting and wasting words in mocking it. But there is every point in them employing their particular expertise and experience to discover, and bring attention to, a deserving film that would otherwise go unseen.

As film critics, our daily ambition should be to find a film so good it moves us to write about it persuasively enough that readers are compelled to seek it out and have the same wonderful viewing experience we did.

Let’s leave the snark for Twitter, where attention spans are short, character limits are shorter and, as the very name “Twitter” suggests, frivolity is key. Let’s make film reviews rewarding essays that, as often as possible, lead the reader to rewarding films.

It’s time to declare open season on open-mike-night criticism.

What kind of BS is it that these are friends of Kristen’s? Since when? If they were friends of hers, he wouldn’t have been trying to hide his face.

Rob is allowed to go out with any women he wants, he’s not married or engaged. It’s not cheating, he’s still single.

You nonstens always compare Kristen’s small indies negatively to studio movies, but yet cry fowl because SWATH is being compared to Cosmopolis? Stupid double standard. Anyhow, there’s no competition between Rob’s and Kristen’s movies. It’s possible to like both of them.
