Robert Pattinson rose to fame playing vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, but his ascent to stardom almost didn’t happen. In a new interview, the actor reveals that his rebellious nature on the set of the first film almost got him fired.

Pattinson recently sat down with the New York Times at the Cannes Film Festival, where his new movie, Good Time, is in competition. Looking back at the early days of his career, the actor admits, “I think one of the best things, basically, about being a bit of a sellout is if you’ve done five movies in a series, you’ve had to accept some responsibility for playing the same character.” He went on to call working on the Twilight franchise “an amazing luxury” and expressed gratitude “to just have fallen into it with the group of people I worked with on it.”

The actor goes on to note that he and his fellow cast members on the first film – who included Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Anna Kendrick, Nikki Reed and Ashley Greene – were hesitant to take orders on set, despite most being relatively unknown at the time. “I didn’t have to kiss anybody’s [ass] the entire time,” he says. “I don’t think I did, anyway.” In fact, Pattinson reveals that his agents had to fly in at one point to straighten him out and prevent him from getting fired.

Also during the interview, Pattinson talks about his conscious decision to make a career shift following the release of the final Twilight film. He followed up the teen blockbuster series with a starring role in the offbeat and surrealistic indie, Cosmopolis, which contained strong sexual content and violence. “I think it was the first time when I worked on something that was quite complex,” the actor says. “I especially love the fact that it came out really at the height of my popularity.” Good Time, which received rave reviews at Cannes, hits theaters in August.
