Editor Resigns After Magazine Calls Rihanna The ‘N-Word’

Truth rating: 10

The editor-in-chief of Dutch fashion magazine Jackie has resigned after calling Rihanna “the ultimate [n-word b*tch]” in an article.

Eva Hoeke, who also referred to the pop star’s bottom as “ghetto,” had initially apologized on Facebook, saying her fashion feature “was intended as a joke.”

Now Hoeke acknowledges that trying to clarify her intentions was “not the right solution.”

“Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately,” she says in a statement.

“After putting my heart and soul into Jackie for eight years, I realize that these errors — although not intended maliciously — are enough reason for leaving.”

The too little, too late mea culpa came after Rihanna herself blasted Hoeke for using the racial epithet.

“I hope u can read english, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights!” the singer wrote on Twitter. “I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!!”

Do you agree with Hoeke’s decision to resign?

you know what?? was that comment really worth this woman losing her job over?? i think not. Rihanna acts just as Eva Hoeke described. i am sorry but Rihanna, you are NOT that famous and NOT that important to warrant this woman losing her job. you have been called worse i am sure. and your actions are less than respectable most of the time. hope you are happy with yourself.

  • cherri

If you were in the position that Rihanna found herself in would you not want satisfaction……..despite what you may think, the lady in question was wrong……I have always heard…it is not the lie, it is who told it….it does not matter what Rih does or who she is, it does not give anyone the right to be nasty toward her………..the woman know that she was wrong and she quit either on her own or asked to………

  • Bubbles0508

Yes it was cause she was publicly humiliated and disrespected. She could have used just the B word but she went too far. And even though she may have been called worse, letting that woman keep her job is like saying racism is ok. That’s like someone using spurs against gay people. All of it is wrong and i just feel that lady thought she was going to get away with it and she didn’t. Plus using words like that on how to dress your little girl is totally inappropriate.

If you act ghetto…you get called ghetto. Clean it up Rihanna and people won’t call you out on it.

  • Boycott_Hollywood

Would be different had Rihanna not used the same offensive word less than thirty days previously in her marketing communications (Twitter).

When Rihanna uses racial slurs to describe herself, doesn’t she know kids will mimic her?

What leg does she have to stand on when others follow her own example?

Egregious, but sheer mimicry of the victim in questions behaviour, I’m afraid.

It’s not surprising, considering how her fans or people in general would most likely boycott the company as this continues to be somewhat of a PR nightmare for the organization.

Well, since I’m an American and value my right to free speech, I would say, NO, she should not have resigned. Was it a poor choice of words and a really poor choice for a joke, YES. However, it’s not worth leaving a job over. I’m not even sure if she should apologize. If she meant what she wrote/approved for printing then so be it…It’s a zine piece not something from the AP. It could be that this editor just put that magazine on the map. I had never heard of them before today.

  • ynvme

your an idiot racist that doesn’t know it’s ass from it’s head I hope you don’t have ANY children hopefully you barren and that uterus of yours is just a shell, and if so I feel sorry for them that they have to grow up with you as a parent cause then that means we’ll have more ignorant reproductions of YOU and that scares the hell out of me!!!

  • Anonymous

People seem to not understand “free speech.” You have a right to say what you want but when you say what you want in a magazine that not only represents what YOU say but what your boss says and your boss disagrees then he has every right to fire you. That has nothing to do with a person’s right to free speech.

This magazine editor threw out a racial slur to a famous person and people around the world were very upset about that. It cast that “Jackie” magazine into a bad light and many subscribers threatened to cancel. No matter what explanation or apology that woman put our there, her superior did the right thing in asking her to leave. I have no idea why this editor did what she did but I can assure this is not the type of things the owner of “Jackie” wanted to “put it on the map.”

Rihanna responded in kind to this slur, which was not a good thing to do, but she is young and in 2011 it is difficult for anyone to accept someone else calling them names in public. I’m glad she did it and I hope it made her feel better to lash out rather than just sit back and take it.

I agree with Cherri on this one. And she didn’t lose her job. She resigned meaning she probably quit the position.

  • CTgirl

In this type of situation “resignation” is usually code for “asked to leave immediately before the s*&t really hits the fan”. The editor showed an incredible lack of judgement and should lose her job. The fact that the N word came to her so easily is troubling.

  • Anonymous

African Americans need to quit using the N word also. I saw a movie the other night mostly with Aftrican Americans and throughout the movie the N word was used. How is that educating the younger generation to not use the word at all, white or black?

  • Anonymous

it was approved for print. don ‘t you think someone other than that woman read the article before it went to press? no one noticed then? Rihanna IS ghetto. plain and simple. nasty, grinding on other women ghetto. she was called out and didn’t like it. but it’s okay for her to refer to herself in that way?/ whatever.

What else do you like re: Lisa
Seriously I think what Lisa was writing is the importance of freedom of speech. She did write it was poor choice of words. Freedom of speech means to be free to express yourself any way you want. Like you did in your response to Lisa.

  • http://twitter.com/daintylynda Lynda Appell

I think any word that normally would be considered offensive isn’t if you know where the other person is coming from. IOW if you are friends you know how to take it. For example a woman friend calls me Bitch Goddess of the Universe but I know its a compliment Its complicated.
Rihanna. Mixed feelings toward her. Yes her videos , general image is a tough ghetto chick OTOH I remember how she was a victim of violence by her then boyfriend.Chris Brown. I don’t believe any woman or for that matter deserves to be treated as she was. How I saw the horrible photos of her face all bruised and swollen. Very mixed feelings toward her. I think that the mag.editor was suffering from foot in mouth disease. re: Rihanna Sure you used the word herself. The singer could of handled it much better. But hey we’re only human.

  • Annie

Are you out of your mind? Since when it okay for a magazine to call someone the N word? She should be fired for being stupid more than being a racist.

  • Annie

I guess you just got your KKK membership card in the male Chris?

  • Annie

Many black people use a slang version of that word and when they use it, they don’t use it they way someone who hates black people use it. They’ve taken it back. Just because you dislike it or don’t understand it, doesn’t mean it’s going to stop being used in rap songs or by black comedians.

If you dislike it so much, don’t listen to those songs and don’t use it yourself. But saying “well black people use it, so why can’t I” is not an excuse. Good luck using that word around black people though. Seriously, good luck.

  • Knickers1414

im aussie, but is the KKK “white” ppl who are against “colourd” ppl?
if so… how the hell does the above reply from annie make any sence to what Chris wrote.. you can be just as much australian and “white” and be called “ghetto” or live in the “ghetto” as any colourd skin person..
Go out and live some good ol life lessons..

  • Knickers1414

YOUR NUTS!!! Go crawl back into the hole you just came out of!!

  • Sarena

Yes indeed worth losing her job and Rihanna is relevant. She is a pop star who is well knowing worldwide. and who are you moron? did you miss the entire story? oh I’m sorry are too stupid to see the context of this dilemma.

  • Tbosmond7

Anyone who uses hateful words while at work should be fired. That magazine didnot just offend Rihanna, but ALL People Of Color. N-bitch, ghetto! Give me a break!

  • Tbosmond7

As a black woman, go to hell!

  • Tbosmond7

Racism is illegal, in case you didn’t know. The magazine was probably afraid of being sued.

  • Anonymous

What is a slang version. It seems the same to me. I don’t use the word and I have never had any interest in using the word. What you are saying is a double standard. I am saying why not eradicate it all together.White people don’t go around calling each other honkey.

  • Sharon Mclaughlin2

Rihanna uses the ‘n’ word in ALOT of her songs,so there was no reason for this writer to resign. Rihanna is sort of a hyprocrite..

  • Asdas

She is not the first person to be called that word, it’s only improtant because she is famous. I hear worst insults everyday.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martina-Gunarova/100002916294918 Martina Gunarova

first of all,Jackie did nor resign ,she had been fired!everybody knows that.second of all,,,,,i need to repeat myself.we should be living in the fair word with one standard law and not with 2 or 3 or 8 different standard depends who are we talking about.if its ok for black people use the word nigger, than everybody else is free to use it.although its an insult for black people, its still a simple translate from some languages, spanish, portuguese ,i think.i am not saying she had the right do that, all i am saying is,you cant use this word freely anytime u want and then feel angry if somebody else does it.isn’t it racism itself if you believe you can use this word as you are black but you are restricting white people use it and the call them a racist???????this is more than double standards my friend!all hip hop is full with nigger here and nigger there…..(in songs),do you see anybody stand up and say “hold on a sec, this is a racism and they should’t use it!!!!NO!!!but why exactly????so,if she does not want to be called nigger, she should not use this word in her songs, and if she make a song in which clip she celebrating Black Panthers, what has been black extremist group what spread hatred against white people, she is not different then people supporting KKK.she needs to start use her brain and stop use her celebrity status.
