Chris Brown Congratulates Rihanna with Friendly Kiss at VMAs; Blogs Freak Out

Since nothing too eventful actually occurred at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, a number of blogs decided to treat a mildly significant moment between Rihanna and Chris Brown like a dramatic incident.

Here’s what happened.

While returning to her chair after winning the Video of the Year award for “We Found Love,” Rihanna stopped to accept congratulations from her ex-boyfriend Brown and another audience member, who were seated directly at the end of the stage.

Brown stood up and hugged Rihanna, and she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

That’s literally all that happened.

But the truth is just not exciting enough for some outlets, who chose to sensationalize the gesture as some kind of watershed moment.

While TMZ accurately points out the (legitimately) newsworthy fact that it’s the first time Rihanna and Brown have publicly touched since he infamously assaulted her before the 2009 Grammys, sites such as HollywoodLife and the New York Daily News interpreted the embrace as a sign the exes have rekindled their romance.

HollywoodLife, which falsely claimed the pair was planning an onstage reunion at the VMAs, writes, “OMG – Rihanna and Chris Brown kissed each other on the lips.”

No, they did not.

The webloid suggests that brief moment means the former couple is “confirming a rekindled romance.”

HollywoodLife is confused about the definition of “confirming” or “romance” or both.

The New York Daily News also claims, “The lip lock prompted speculation there is truth to rumors about the couple’s rekindled romance, despite Brown’s relationship with model Karreuche Tran.”

Well, there’s probably always going to be “speculation” about the pair reuniting, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.

Gossip Cop is told — once again — that Brown and Rihanna are just friends who share a history with each other.

    They may be friends again but it’s rumored they’re more than that. Rihanna is free to do whatever she wants in her life, but it seems foolish to go back to someone who abused her and continued to show no remorse. Hopefully nothing happens to her again, though with his temper it’s likely.

    What I don’t think people who haven’t been in an abusive relationship understand is that being in such a relationship really plays tricks on your mind. .People seem to think that an abusive relationship is horrible all the time, well that is not true just like in every relationship you still have good moments.So when it is over you question everything about the relationship remembering not only the horrible moments but the sweet ones and you make the decision in your head
    what happened really wasn’t that bad and that the guy really did love
    you. That it wasn’t his fault things turned out with your facing being beaten about. It’s stupid but it’s the way some women end up thinking. Probably why Rihanna has such a hard time getting over Chris Brown. She still loves him and questions if things needed to turn out the way they did.

    In the end it’s her life, it may not be the smartest thing she could do but there is probably nothing that anyone will ever say to her that will change her mind about him. People are going to do what they want to do, putting him down every time she is seen with him isn’t going to change her mind. More then anything it will make her want to defend him
