Golden Globes Boss: Ricky Gervais’ Jokes Were “Totally Unacceptable”
And now comes the backlash of Ricky Gervais’ hosting techniques… Philip Berk, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the group responsible for putting on the Golden Globes) says host Ricky Gervais went too far last night with his jokes.
Gervais made biting remarks about a number of stars throughout the telecast, but particularly during his opening monologue. “He definitely crossed the line,” Berk tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And some of the things were totally unacceptable.”
“Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones,” he added. Berk says that he “had no idea what Ricky was going to say” as the comedian does not allow any pre-show scrutiny.
As for speculation that Gervais was lectured during the show or kept offstage at key moments, the HFPA president says that such rumors are “ridiculous.” Berk declined to comment as to whether he would recommend Gervais as a host again next year.
What do you think? Did Gervais go too far, or was he simply expressing his “wit,” as Al Pacino and others believed? We thought he was a brilliant host, and hope this won’t be the last we’ll see of Gervais as a comedic host.
