Golden Globes Boss: Ricky Gervais’ Jokes Were “Totally Unacceptable”

Truth rating: 10

(NBC)

And now comes the backlash…

Philip Berk, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the group responsible for putting on the Golden Globes) says host Ricky Gervais went too far last night with his jokes.

Gervais made biting remarks about a number of stars throughout the telecast, but particularly during his opening monologue (VIDEO HERE).

“He definitely crossed the line,” Berk tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And some of the things were totally unacceptable.”

“Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones,” he added.

Berk says that he “had no idea what Ricky was going to say” as the comedian does not allow any pre-show scrutiny.

As for speculation that Gervais was lectured during the show or kept offstage at key moments, the HFPA prez says that such rumors are “ridiculous.”

Berk declined to comment as to whether he would recommend Gervais as a host again next year.

What do you think?

Did Gervais go too far, or was he simply expressing his “wit,” as Al Pacino and others believed?

Agree with MissZee. It was funny. I will be disappointed if they don’t bring him back.

He is very funny…definetely should come next year. The show is boring, he just made it more berable…he and Robert Pattinson.

He was funny, saying things many of us joke about too. I don’t agree that he should have named names of those who weren’t there to here it – the comments about Charlie Sheen could have done well without actually naming him. Same with Mel Gibson, who was at least there last year to face the laughter. I like the pace of the show and Ricky’s casual humor and think it fits this particular award who perfectly. Bring him back again!

This guy is not even funny. One ep of the original “Office” and you want to hang yourself.
