UPDATED: ‘Resident Evil’ Moves Easily Into Top Spot at the Box Office

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D won the weekend box office with an estimated $27.7 million in ticket sales. The fourth film in the post-apocalyptic Milla Jovovich franchise easily beat the debuts of the first three installments.
Takers and The American, two of the movies that battled for #1 last week, were neck-and-neck for second and third place with $6.1 million and $5.9 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, Machete took fourth place with $4.2 million, and Going the Distance rounded out the top Five with $3.8 million.
The bottom five were The Other Guys ($3.6 million), The Last Exorcism ($3.5 million), The Expendables ($3.3. Million), Eat Pray Love ($3 million), and Inception ($2.9 million).
