On the heels of Reese Witherspoon‘s break-up with Jake Gyllenhaal, Star magazine has an article titled, “Reese & Gerard’s Secret Hookups!” which claims the “Legally Blonde” star and Gerard Butler are having a romance on the sly.

According to a so-called “friend” of Witherspoon’s, “Reese’s friends are giggling about her secretly meeting up with Gerard. She thinks he’s superhot!… They’ve hung out a few times, mostly at his place in L.A.”

Gossip Cop is “giggling” at this bad reporting, but we continue…

The supermarket tab goes on to claim that producers from one of the film studios thought they would “make a hot on-screen couple,” so a meeting was arranged for them to read scripts together for producers. “They got very chatty… and there was noticeable chemistry. After that reading, they started talking and hanging out,” says the source.

Sure. Right.

So how does Star get itself out of this made-up mess?

The mag conveniently has its questionable source say, “Reese doesn’t want to hurt Jake’s feelings and doesn’t want him to know about her and Gerard. She’s not interested in taking it a step further.”

We’d say nicely played, but it wasn’t.

These supposed “secret hookups” must have been so secretive, because neither Witherspoon nor Butler knew about them!

And, in case one still has a doubt, a rep for Butler tells Gossip Cop that the Star‘s tale is “not true.”
