Raven-Symone: I Used To Tan 3 Or 4 Times A Week To Have Darker Skin For TV Show
Raven-Symone says she used to do whatever to took to have darker skin while filming her hit show “That’s So Raven.” In the new OWN documentary Light Girls, the former child actress and others talk about the complicated issues that come with being a light-skinned black person. Watch the video below.
“When I had my own show, I used to tan three or four times a week in a tanning bed to get darker,” says Raven-Symone. “It’s funny, one of the lighting guys came up [to me]… He goes, ‘Raven, I need you to stop tanning. You’re getting too dark, and we have to re-light the whole entire show.’ I was like, ‘Sorry. I was just trying to be pretty.'”
In the documentary, television producer Ralph Farquhar mentions that in casting some projects, there’s enormous pressure to make sure lighter-skinned performers don’t wind up in roles intended for darker-skinned actors. He says it can result in a “talented actress who’s being overlooked because of her complexion.” The actress Erica Hubbard also discusses how she tanned because of Hollywood’s focus on certain skin colors for certain roles.
The movie is a follow-up to the documentary “Dark Girls,” and premieres on Monday on OWN. Take a look at what Raven-Symone and others say in the preview video below, and tell us what you think.
