Quvenzhane Wallis, who’s nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild, has been tapped to star as the lead in the upcoming remake of Annie.

On Sunday, Columbia Pictures production head Hannah Minghella said in a statement, “With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhane Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star.”

“She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her,” added Mighella.

Annie, set be be released during the holiday season in 2014, is being directed by Will Gluck, and produced by Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, as well as Jay-Z.

The Smiths’ daughter Willow had initially been cast in the title role, but had dropped out.

No. I don’t like it. This child is ugly.

  • Regina1180

Ok I just don’t agree with this. First of all, Annie doesn’t need to be made into ANOTHER movie. Secondly, Annie’s signature is her curly red hair. Even if they give this little girl a wig (which I hope they won’t), it still won’t look right.

Why do they ruin things from my childhood?

  • Evil Overlord

Great!! Another classic story goes hip-hop…

  • MissZee

maybe it’s just me but it seems every classic movie that had the main role being played by a white person, the Smiths are producing the black version of it. I don’t mean for it to sound racist, but it’s just my feeling.

  • guest

You DON’T sound racist. Annie should be left alone.

  • Dibbley

Little orphan Annie is a curly redheaded little girl, end of story! I think that this little girl could be brilliant, but don’t call the movie Annie…. rewrite it if you want, but it is not Annie! just my opinion….. and this is coming from a ginger! we need our heros too ya know ;)

  • Jamie

Wow I’m disgusted by all the racist comments here. The movies and stories (books included) are all about using your imagination and making the impossible possible. It’s a movie/story people, who cares if it gets re-done? You don’t like it? Don’t watch it, but don’t call a child ugly because you don’t like she’s not a red head with curly hair. My daughter is a red head with curly hair and I’m not offended. Get the F over it.

  • Tay

This girl could be wonderful but Annie is a white girl that is known for her red curly hair!! I get not wanting to be racist or discriminate against people but this girl is NOT Annie!! She can’t be Annie just like I cant play Beyonce in a movie about her life!!!

  • erica

Yeah because everything black = hip hop. Don’t be stupid. Have you even seen Beasts of the Southern Wild?

  • Seth

Agreed. I’m tired of people saying horribly racist out ignorant things and acting like saying “I’m not racist” or “not to sound racist” automatically makes the statements okay. The fact that she’s red headed isn’t vital to the plot.

  • Staciehew

Such supposed movie purists we have commenting here! Annie has red, curly hair, but it’s not a central story line at all so it really doesn’t matter if that part is different. I’ll point to Brandy as Cinderella. I was a kid when that movie came out and I loved it. It only occurs to racist adults to say things like a black woman can’t play Cinderella because she’s supposed to be white and blonde. Get over it, roles can change.

  • ms_ariz

This has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with the fact that Annie is an iconic character with red curly hair. They wouldn’t have a re-make with a white girl with black curly hair or blonde curly hair because that isn’t what makes Annie unique. It’s the red hair. Without it, it’s just a story about any ol’ orphan girl; not Annie.

  • Jamie

Really?? Not racist? So you’d be saying the same thing if it was a white girl with blonde or black hair? Cause it’s not impossible to dye or curl hair.

  • ms_ariz

That’s not what I said; do not put words in my mouth. I was referring to the character having any other hair color than red – not the actresses themselves. Perhaps it’s an assumption on my part, but I cannot picture Quvenzhane Wallis with red hair. It would look too unnatural,

  • Ama

and Cleopatra was black (or at least, mixed race) but Elizabeth taylor played her. And I guess you complained just as bitterly when Angelina Jolie played Marianne Pearle, a black woman?

  • Martina

Annie was white. Should stay white.
If there is a black role in the black movie and white actress will take over, the all hell will broke!
So you all can call it racism when it’s against black? But once it’s againt white it’s what?! A right ?!
So white people should not be proud?!
So white people have no right to protect their historic wealth and fortune?!
So all white people on this planet sudenly owning to all black people
of the world and should just give it to them all….on the plate?!?!
You see, I believe that every nation should preserve their
    Identity and historic importance!
    Everyone! White too!
So give me the efing break with racism.
White people will not be slammed for their pride!

And by the way….I saw this child at the Oscars,
She IS ugly, she is arrogant and she should not play Annie!
    Eat your heart out!

  • Martina

    You know what…..?!
    So I am racist!
    Are you happy now?
What is the difference If I am or not, by your standart I certainly
    am.
I will not be ashamed or afraid to say Annie should be played by white person!
Will you sound with the idea when black people from the book about black movie would be played by white people?!
Why should I be imagining black people while I read Annie?
Identity is important to a Black people?! So it does to white people!
    Racist my ass…..
I lovey country and my identity and I will not apologise that Annie is and was a white person based on white character!
No one should take your pride.
I am not going to take that from black people, therefor I will remain mine!

  • guest

how about the simple fact that a white billionaire in the 1930′s could not adopt a black girl without causing a terrible scandal? many people would assume she was his illegitimate child. it would effect his businesses. it is simply more believable that annie be a white girl. high society in the 1930′s would not accept her as an equal and as a warbux that is what she is suppossed to be.

  • MissZee

do you honestly believe this girl can pull off red curly hair while still looking cute? i just can’t see it
