Queen Elizabeth is not dead, despite a major screw up by the BBC. The British news outlet killed off the 89-year-old monarch with an erroneous tweet this morning that read, “Queen Elizabrth [sic] has died.” The misinformation, however, was picked up by a number of outlets, including CNN. Gossip Cop talked to a spokesperson for the Queen, who told us that she’s quite alive and hosting a reception at Buckingham Palace in a few hours with Prince Philip. And while it’s true that Queen Elizabeth went to London’s King Edward VII hospital this morning, her spokesperson tells Gossip Cop it was an annual checkup and a ” routine pre-scheduled appointment.”

The BBC has since apologized for “any offense” and explained it sometimes does obituary rehearsals for key members of the royal family, and that the “died” tweet was “mistakenly sent” from one of its journalist’s accounts. The tweet was, of course, deleted. Meanwhile, CNN also said it was sorry and tweeted, “Please disregard our previous tweet about Queen Elizabeth. It was sent in error.”

The BBC has since tweeted about such important matters as a 2,000-year-old pearl being found in Australia and that “Godzilla finally gets citizenship in Japan.” What do you think of the BBC’s dead wrong tweet about Queen Elizabeth?
