Prince William gave Kate Middleton the engagement ring that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana.

The ring from jeweler Garrard features an oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds.

The groom-to-be told reporters, “This was my way of making sure that my mother didn’t miss out on today.”

Prince William and Middleton announced their long awaited engagement earlier today.

Diana and Charles wed in July 1981 in a lavish ceremony broadcast worldwide.
