“Pretty Little Liars” Recap: “Along Comes Mary”
On Tuesday’s “Pretty Little Liars,” Alison ended up in Mary Drake’s care, the Liars became suspicious of Jenna, and one of the girls received a proposal. Here are the most important things to know about “Along Comes Mary,” the fifth episode of season 7.
The show began with Alison arriving home, having been released from the psychiatric ward in Mary’s custody. Mary said she learned of Charlotte’s death from Elliott, and blamed him for convincing her to manipulate Ali. She asked for “forgiveness,” and wanted to be a family. Meanwhile, the police were investigating Elliott’s disappearance, and had apparently found his abandoned car.
Ali discovered Elliott wiped out her bank accounts, and was taken aback when Jenna showed up to her house. She thought Alison was still hospitalized, and refused to say how she knew Elliott. Ali yelled at her, “Next time you call Archer, tell him I said to go to hell.” Jenna shot back, “Maybe he’s already there.”
Emily awoke at Sabrina’s, having fallen asleep after spending the night talking. They shared a kiss, before Em realized she was late for an exam, and was not allowed to take the test. She met up with Aria after, who told her that a text on Elliott’s burner phone showed that he learned Ali didn’t kill Charlotte. They also discovered he had a secret apartment, and frequently spoke with one specific phone number.
Emily later became alarmed when she got a 92 on her test, despite missing it. An IM from A.D. the then read, “Thank me later, ungrateful bitch.” That motivated her to contact the aforementioned number and set up a meeting at the “usual spot.” She and Aria set off to the apartment, where they found various things, such as a passport, payment records, and a book labeled “Archer Dunhill.” The search was interrupted by Toby, whom they told that they were investigating after Ali learned of the residence. Toby was convinced Elliott was “on the run,” and told them to leave before more cops show up.
Spencer tried to track down Caleb, who wasn’t returning her calls, with Toby at the police precinct telling her he “needs time to think” and would “reach out” when ready. While there, she ran into Marco, and learned he was Toby’s new supervisor on the Elliott case, but they pretended they didn’t know each other. Spencer later confronted Hanna over “wearing one guy’s ring when you still have feelings for another.”
Hanna also investigated Jenna’s continued presence in Rosewood, and discovered she extended her stay at Radley. At the bar, Jenna met Sara, and they bonded over knowing the same “girls.” The two ended up at The Brew after a day of shopping, where they taunted Emily about “coming home to finish what you started.”
Marco later told Ali that their theory was Elliott was after her money, and targeted her after Charlotte was hospitalized. They believed he was now in Baltimore, after his credit card was used at a rental car agency. “I won’t stop til we find him,” Marco vowed. That led the Liars to think someone knew what they did, as they expected the trail to end in Philadelphia, and they wondered whether Mary, Jenna, and/or Sara were involved. And Ali later found her red jacket returned with a note from A.D.
Amid all this, Ezra returned to town, telling Aria he told Nicole’s parents about them and that he’s “moving forward.” Asked what happened while he was gone, she did not mention Elliott’s murder or his “disappearance.” Bizarrely, Aria later saw Ezra’s phone ringing… with “Nicole” as the caller. In the final minutes, he sent Aria a “we need to talk” text message, leading her to The Brew.
When she went up to the apartment, she discovered it filled with candles. Ezra told her, “You told me once, a long tme ago, that you couldn’t imagine your life without me. And I told you that I wanted you in mine and we’d figure something out. And then we spent years apart, a world apart. Five years later when you walked into the door after all that time, it felt like the last flat stretch of a roller coaster ride… when you can breathe again. That’s when I knew: I want you in my life for the rest of my life. I don’t ever want to let you go.”
He dropped to one knee, took out a ring, and said, “Aria Marie Montgomery, will you marry me?” Before she could answer, the show then jumped to Noel joining Sara and Jenna at the Radley to end the episode.
