“Pretty Little Liars: 5 Years Forward” Recap
“Pretty Little Liars” aired a “5 Years Forward” special on Tuesday, giving fans a sneak peek at what to expect during season 6B. As Gossip Cop reported, the midseason six finale aired in August. Now this one-night-only event gave fans a sneak peek before the new “big bad” makes his or her way to Rosewood in January. Here are the most important things you need to know.
The special began with showrunner I. Marlene King sitting in Spencer’s barn with Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell and Ashley Benson. The special went back and forth between the Liars, the men of “PLL” (Ian Harding, Keegan Allen and Tyler Blackburn), and Sasha Pieterse all talking to King about the series.
Ashley Benson Talks Hanna:
Caleb and Hanna move to New York City together, as talked about in the 6A prom episode. The couple share a small apartment in Tribeca while Caleb continues his technology career and Hanna attends college at the Fashion Institute of Technology. As a fashion student she gets the opportunity to intern for Zac Posen and travels to Europe with the designer.
While in Europe she meets Claudia Greco, the “PLL” version of Anna Wintour, and becomes her assistant. Because of her constant traveling, Haleb spend too much time apart, leading to their breakup. While in Europe, she meets the man who eventually becomes her fiance.
Troian Bellisario Talks Spencer:
Spencer goes to Georgetown and has the chance to focus on academics without distractions from A. Toby and Spencer’s relationship crumbles after spending so much time apart as he still lives in Rosewood. Spencer begins a career in politics, working on Capitol Hill as a lobbyist. After the time jump, Spencer lives in the barn she had previously designed while she helps her mother run for the Senate.
Shay Mitchell Talks Emily:
Emily leaves for California and attends college at Pepperdine University, before dropping out after her dad passes away while serving in the Army. Without a plan, she begins bartending, refusing to leave California. King reveals Emily comes back to Rosewood with a secret she hasn’t told the rest of the Liars, and is the most damaged out of all four of the girls.
Lucy Hale Talks Aria:
Aria is in a new relationship with a character named Liam, with whom she works. After high school, Aria moves to Georgia and majors in photography, but soon transfers to Boston when she decides to pursue writing. Aria is now working for a publisher, which is how she and Ezra reconnect, as they start working together. Lucy thinks tat Aria is in denial over how much “A” has affected her, saying Aria hides behind her work and her relationships.
First Never-Before-Seen Scene:
Three months after the midseason finale, Alison and Jason are seen visiting Charlotte at Welby State Psychiatric Hospital. As Alison and Jason walk over to Charlotte, they wonder out loud how their father could have ever treated her so badly. The siblings don’t exchange words with Charlotte, but both Alison and Jason accept hugs from their sister.
Sasha Pieterse on Charlotte:
Alison is still working towards forgiving Charlotte for all of the torture, and while they are in a much better place, she recognizes some things are hard to forgive. Alison ends up marrying Charlotte’s doctor, but their relationship needs to be kept under wraps because of his role in Charlotte’s life. Sasha says Charlotte is very different and very remorseful for her actions.
Keegan Allen Talks Toby:
Toby inherits a large sum of money from the explosion “A” set off in his childhood home, and buys land outside of Rosewood so that he can build his dream house. While still a police officer in Rosewood, he accidentally walks in on a robbery and apprehends the suspect, who ends up becoming an important character in season 6B.
Ian Harding Talks Ezra:
Of the men, King admits that Ezra has the most emotional baggage after the time jump, and is the most damaged by the last five years. After Aria leaves for college, Ezra follows a character named Cole down to South America for a Habitat for Humanity style project, but it is then taken away from him “quickly and violently.” When Ezra returns to Rosewood, he has no sense of who he is and what he wants to do with his life, and finds solace in alcohol.
Why The Liars Return To Rosewood:
Bellisario reveals that Alison asks the Liars to come back, asking for their help in freeing Charlotte from the hospital. The actress admits the Liars don’t really want to help, but feel obligated, as they feel an allegiance to Alison.
Second Never-Before-Seen Scene:
Alison is seen talking to her students, warning them to study as there will be a test. When class is dismissed, all of the students leave, but Mona Vanderwaal is sitting at a desk with a gift. Mona is in town for her 21st birthday and says she’d like to go out for a drink. Mona says she invited the Liars, but “it was in vain.” Alison says she’s been writing with Hanna, Mona says she and Hanna crashed a party at Matt Damon’s house, and Alison says Emily has been seeing Paige.
Alison tells Mona she knows she’s not here for a celebration, she just wants to get in and talk to Charlotte. Mona says she’s going to begin a career in the public eye and wants to make sure Charlotte doesn’t say anything negative about her. Mona then leaves but waits outside and listens to Alison making a phone call saying, “Mona was here and she wants to see Charlotte…”
The New Big Bad:
Once they return to Rosewood, the girls begin to receive messages again. This time it feels much darker, as the threats are life-altering, and not just blackmail.
