President Obama Attends Hollywood Fundraisers After Charleston Church Shooting; Tyler Perry, Chuck Lorre Host
As Gossip Cop reported, alleged gunman Dylann Storm Roof opened fire inside African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday night. Nine people were killed, including pastor and South Carolina State Senator Clementa Pinckney, who Obama knew. The President gave a press conference about the tragedy at the White House, shortly before he boarded Air Force One for a flight to California.
After being greeted by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Obama went to at Lorre’s Pacific Palisades house for a small gathering. According to The Hollywood Reporter, about 25 people were there for a round-table discussion, including Conan O’Brien, Matthew Perry, and Kiefer Sutherland, at a cost of $16,700 a person. The outlet said the President addressed the massacre, and quoted him as telling the group, “This shooting is incredibly personal, and I’ve done this too much as president. Look, we’ve got to go back to the base of the issue and we have to fight it until it’s fixed.”
The President later attended a dinner and reception at Perry’s home in Beverly Hills. As Gossip Cop noted, Perry grew up going to AME churches and took to Twitter to share his grief. Still, his event went on as planned, with 250 people paying up to $33,400 to join in. “To see such a horrific event unfold like that is particularly shocking and it’s a reminder that we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Obama was quoted as saying at that event.
The comments echo Obama’s speech from earlier in the day. As Gossip Cop reported, the President said, “I’ve had to make statements like this too many times,” and called for gun control. Obama is set to travel to San Francisco for more fundraisers on Friday with all the money going to the Democratic National Committee, while Hillary Clinton is also in the area to do her own presidential fundraising among California’s celebrities and elite.
