Possible arrests over controversial Madonna project

It was a little more than a week ago that Madonna broke ground for the construction of her $15 million Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, and already there are protests and possible arrests looming in the Malawian village where the school is to be built.
Today, approximately 140 protesters tried to block the school’s construction in Chinkhota village, and demanded they receive more money for the land that the government is leasing to Madonna’s charity for the next 99 years.
The protest grew out of a failed attempt by government officials and Madonna’s charity to reach an agreement with the villagers’ reps.
One government official was quoted today saying to the village’s chief, “If we cannot agree on this and if you cannot understand that this is government land, then I will have no choice but tell police to arrest you people for blocking development work on the site.”
Gossip Cop has yet to hear back from Madonna’s rep about this latest controversy.
