Pope Francis Joins Instagram (PHOTOS)
Pope Francis has officially joined Instagram! Check out the photos below!
Early Saturday morning, the Pope tweeted on his official @Pontifex Twitter account, “I am beginning a new journey, on Instagram, to walk with you along the path of mercy and the tenderness of God.” His new Instagram page, with the username @franciscus, became verified around the same time. And then came the first post.
Along with a photo of himself kneeling in prayer, the Pope wrote, “Pray for me.” The caption included the same phrase in eight other languages. The Pope’s profile picture is the same snapshot, and his bio reads, “‘I want to walk with you along the way of God’s mercy and tenderness.’ (Official Account. Copyright L’Osservatore Romano.)”
In just a few hours, the Pope has amassed more than 300,000 followers. His lone post has also been liked nearly 50,000 times. It was revealed a few days ago that he planned to join the photo-sharing site, but like his Twitter page, it was said that the Vatican will be doing the actual posting for him.
The Pope’s decision to sign up came weeks after a meeting with Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom at the Vatican. Afterward, Systrom said on his own Instagram that they had bonded over “the power of images to unite people across different cultures and languages.” In response to the Pope’s first post, Systrom wrote on his own page, “Watching Pope Francis post his first photo to Instagram today was an incredible moment.”
He continued, “@franciscus, welcome to the Instagram community! Your messages of humility, compassion and mercy will leave a lasting mark.” Check out a screengrab of the Pope’s very first Instagram post below!
