Phillip Phillips Gets Standing Ovation for “Sexy” Usher Cover on American Idol

Phillip Phillips took his frontrunner status to a new level on Wednesday’s “American Idol.”

The former pawn shop worker blew away the judges with his guitar-infused cover of Usher‘s “U Got It Bad.”

Phillips’ rendition earned him a standing ovation from the judges, with Jennifer Lopez calling it “sexy” and Randy Jackson declaring, “We have a true artist on this stage.”

    Phillip Phillips is not trying to be anything he is not …that’s rare in my view, and bodes well for him in the end. The rest of the performers rarely give kudo’s to their back-up vocals/players etc, while Phillips ALWAYS does and as a Musician appreciate that his great voice notwithstanding.

    I love the way you all complain about these singers.. first of all, America votes… I happened to love Philip, I voted for Haley last year and she could sing Jessica under the table…. Remember how the Judges treated her.. I didnt hear any race complainest last year….I voted for Casey James the year before and they gave him a bad time… Remember…….. Well, he is going to be a huge entertainer.. probalby like Carrie Underwood when all is said and done…
    Are you going to buy Jessica,s Cd?? she is young and has an awesome voice.. she will stay in the music buisness.. but dont cut the other singers out.. they are trying and working hard also…

    The night Phillip auditioned I wrote on Facebook “Phillip Phillips is the one to beat this year” and I still think it today. They are all good at this point but he just has some extra – internally, externally, he is the total package. It doesn’t hurt that he is humble and darling either! By the way, I’m 65 yrs old!

    Exactly, Jdcook.
    The thing that I have noticed about Phillips is that he shows us who he is, with no facade. When he sings, he hides nothing. It’s almost scary. His passion and soul are right there for us to feel and see, as well as hear. This is a true blues-man, with a future that must be allowed to grow.

    the mainstream nowadays desperately need his music. shucks to admit it but i’m new to this bluesy rock genre, thanks to phillip. for these past 4 to 5 years all i’ve been listening to on the radio (listen but do not connect) are gaga and katy perry and such artists with meaningless dirty lyrics. he’s one of those that write about real stuff. cant wait for his album for sure ! =)

    Good for you Sharon, I too am older 75, and I love Phillip, I have liked every song he has sang. He does exactly what JLo said you forget about everything else and you are in the moment and nothing else matters, just the music!!! And my favorite music is county, but I will by cds by Phillip. I was voting for Skyler but last week switched to Phil, I really like his style!!!! This next week he has got to be fantastic, the other kids are so good. I can”t wait to see what he does!!!!
