Phillip Phillips Ignores Celebrity Mentors’ Advice, Called “Brilliant” on Idol (VIDEO)

Phillip Phillips once again blew away the judges on “American Idol” – in part by ignoring advice from the show’s celebrity mentors.

The singer was advised by Interscope head Jimmy Iovine and guest mentor Diddy to hang up his guitar, while fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger told the former pawn star worker to stop wearing gray.

Phillips’ discarded all the warnings, sang his heart out on Billy Joel‘s “Movin Out,” and was called “brilliant” by the judges for doing so.

    The judges need to start being judges and grow a pair and tell Phillip that it’s time to give up the Dave mathews band shtick. He’s basically ripped Dave Mathews every move every performance

    Why are the judges avoiding the pink elephant with purple polka dots in the room? Phillip Phillips is a Dave Mathews impersonator! I wish he would be himself, he may have real talent. If they see a contestant with a pompadour, shaking his hips, raising one side of his lip and saying, “thank you very much” in a southern accent… would they compare him to Elvis… or say he’s totally original? Phillip, be yourself, not Dave Mathews, and if you won’t, go start a Dave Mathews cover band.

    I am so glad other people are talking about this. I cannot even stand watching this kid and then listen to how “original” he is. He hasn’t come up with one move, maneurism, style of singing that I haven’t seen done a million times over by Dave Matthews and no where near as good if I might add…these judges suck and need to start giving real advice.

    Its really hard for me to listen to him anymore. He is SO talented but loving DMB for 20 years, its hard to watch the similarities. But I have to say that I am a singer and since I grew up on DMB I find myself impersonating SOME mannerisms without even realizing it. I think when someone has such an admiration for someone, you do repeat them without even noticing.

    I can’t believe that he gets away with this. I would feel better about it if in the beginning he came clean and confessed that he is a huge DMB fan. I would be able to tolerate that. When I saw him do the happy feet Dave Matthews jig I just thought “NO FREAKING WAY!” I just want someone to acknowledge and address this… Either him or the judges. They clame to love music,have they never seen a DMB show? Someone tell me what the heck is going on. I feel like I’m in the twilight zone everytime he takes the stage.

    I also must say that it’s not just the way he uses his guitar. It’s the growl in his voice during the chorus’, its the way he moves his body, his facial grimaces as well as the smile, its Dave’s swag! Can I get an amen!

    I feel like I am the only one that sees it!!! He has every manerism, move, note, that dave has ever used. Why has no one said anything. Every week it seriously disgusts me.

    He is very similar to Dave Matthews, however, to imitate so accurately takes a lot of talent. Also, Dave Matthews has not made a hit in awhile and is gettting older, so it is nice to have an up and coming singer similar to him to enjoy for this generation.
