Phil Spector Divorcing Third Wife Rachelle Short While In Prison
Phil Spector is divorcing his wife while he remains in prison for the murder of Lana Clarkson.
Spector married Rachelle Short, his third wife, in 2006, three years after Clarkson’s death. His trial began in 2007, but a hung jury led to a mistrial, and then a re-trial in 2008. In 2009, the music producer was found guilty of murder in the second degree, and later sentenced to 19 years to life behind bars.
Despite his imprisonment, he and Short stayed married. Now Spector, 76, is seeking to change that, and he’s blaming the split on his 36-year-old wife’s alleged spending habits. Though he cites irreconcilable differences in his divorce petition, he reportedly accuses Short of blowing through his money with such purchases as a $350,000 plane and two homes for her mom. The filing also references expensive cars, jewelry, and even plastic surgery, according to TMZ.
Spector cites his net worth as $35 million, but claims Short is only giving him a monthly stipend of $300 for prison items. He now wants his daughter, Nicole, to control his financial estate. Nicole’s mother is Spector’s former girlfriend, Janis Zavala, with whom he also had a son, Phillip Jr., who tragically died of leukemia.
Spector’s first marriage was to Spectors Three singer Annette Merar. Following their split, he went on to marry Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes. Together they adopted three children. This will now be the controversial star’s third divorce. Spector and Short are pictured above outside his trial in 2008.
