Jay-Z and Brooklyn Nets Subject of Racially-Charged New York Post Column

Truth rating: 10

New York Post sports writer Phil Mushnick is taking heat after writing a racially-charged op-ed about the NBA Nets’ relocation from New Jersey to Brooklyn and minority owner Jay-Zs redesign of the team’s logo.

Mushnick writes, “As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new ‘urban’ home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?”

He continues, “Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N***as?”

“The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B***hes or Hoes,” adds the sports writer.

Mushnick further satirizes: “Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!”

Not surprisingly, a number of people are taking offense to Mushnick’s article.

What do you think about Mushnick’s comments?

What a racist asshole….he comments are offensive and out of hand. For the life of me I don’t understand why he would not think, people no matter what color you are would not have a problem with his comments. Maybe he should be fired… I think that would send a clear message. I actually like the new black and white logo

Racism is real! Just curious.. When describing what this racist asshole was writing, why was Jay-Z described as “the minority owner Jay-Z?” Why not simply “the owner Jay-Z.”

  • Ginger

seriously?!? Jay Z has to be laughing. This guys comments appear to be racist sure…..but, if you listened to the music you would find this comical. Meanwhile, Jay Z is going to keep rolling in the “cash”. If I was in his shoes I would have a copy of this article framed, write a song and take it to the bank :)

  • Really?

Because he only owns a small portion of the team (less than 2% I believe)… a minority share. The title “owner” would most likely be reserved for Mikhail Prokhorov who owns 80% of the shares.

While the words were harsh, certainly not poetic, they ring more of a grumpy old man who is lamenting his good old days while reciting the age-old “the world is going to hell in a hand basket and this generation is leading the way”, mantra than one of a hardened racist.
In the meanwhile, Jay-Z is going to have to deal with a new reality: Build your empire by romanticizing the lyrical vernacular of the ghetto-life, and every now and then, the chickens are going to come home to roost–just to remind you.

This is proof that having the ability to write for a wide audience does NOT make you any smarter, informed or intelligent than the people reading it. What a fucking asshole. It’s pretty obvious to me that his opinion of Jay-Z, or of African-Americans in general–is as informed as your average lily-white, poorly educated redneck with a hate on for everything. He wrote this trash about a successful businessman, a husband and a father…who just happens to be black. Where the HELL was the editor when this crap was written, firing one up behind the shed?!? This nobody writer just lost his job, and I guarantee that Jay-Z is laughing himself sick over what the sad cracker just wrote…I hope the article was worth his loss of livelihood.

@ CHLOE, Although i don’t care much for The Nets (yes it could have a little to do with the fact that they are abandoning NJ, Newark and not to mention “THE ROCK”-The revolutionary state of the art arena built specifically w/the Nets {and Devils} in mind, not to mention the thousands of jobs much needed for newark residents), and by the way they happen to suck! But i absolutely agree with u 100%,this writer should most definitely be fired.I am all for freedom of speech but when u start calling individuals the N word,B’s and Hoes in what is otherwise seen as a repetable Paper it comes across as nothing more than a trash rag Spewing this racists’ Hatred & perhaps actual jealousy for a “man”(in every sense of the word) who turned his life around for the absolute better, and made himself hundreds of millions in the process.

  • “SHABAZZ”

@ “REALLY?” Not sure of the exact percentages of ownership either, but you’re definitely right. Dani, I seriously “doubt” The NY PISS(post) would be Adding insult to injury…..hmm or would they?

  • “SHABAZZ”

If anyone recalls this is similar to what Bill O’reilly and the likes of him wrote when President Obama invited Common to perform at The White House. The artists whom these racists choose to attack are so far removed artistically as well as in their general conduct to those of us who follow or are simply somewhat aware of their careers/lifestyles that it is crystal clear that these are absolute cases of Pure Rascism and a hatred for the successes of these BlackMen whom are or have become so far removed from the stereo typical B.S.generally expected of rappers that the writers can’t help but to attempt to trash them even if it means making up or fogging statements or events in their musical lifestyles. The fact that they choose the most squeaky clean individuals only validates their ignorance of the lifestyle all together and, as would be said ‘their HATE”. and in the industry HATE is seen as a good thing. It means that the individual actually admires what you do so much to the point that they become jealous, that jealousy causes one to attempt to find some fault,,,and when there is no fault to be found ‘the Hater(s)’ MAKE UP whatever thaty can.So if they arent hating you’re not doing something right! So believe me JayZ is smiling his signature grin all the way to the bank,
