‘Top Chef’ Winner Paul Qui Arrested For Allegedly Assaulting Girlfriend
“Top Chef” winner Paul Qui was arrested in Austin on Saturday for allegedly assaulting girlfriend Stephanie Rodriguez while he was drunk and high. According to an arrest affidavit, officers arrived at Qui’s apartment after one of his friends called the police to report a domestic dispute. The cops then reportedly found Qui with “blood all over his face, arms, legs and clothing,” while Rodriguez was crying and holding her young son.
Rodriguez told police that she and her son were asleep when Qui, who won Season 9 of “Top Chef” in 2011, came home in the middle of the night with a group of friends. The men then woke up Rodriguez and convinced her to have drinks with them, but Qui became enraged and accused his friends of flirting with her. According to the police affidavit, the chef kicked all of his friends out of his apartment, and then began knocking over furniture. And when Rodriguez tried to leave the apartment with her young son, Qui allegedly picked her up and began throwing her against walls and doors.
Rodriguez further reported to the police that Qui had been heavily drinking at the time of the alleged attack, and was also high on a combination of drugs. Qui was arrested and booked for unlawful restraint, as well as assault causing bodily injury to a family member, both of which are misdemeanors. The chef was released later on Saturday on $20,000 bond. For his part, Qui admitted to police that he restrained Rodriguez, but only because he wanted her to be in the apartment when the police arrived.
