Oscar Virgins: First-Time Nominees At Academy Awards (PHOTOS)
For some in Hollywood the Oscars are a semi-regular event, but for many this year’s ceremony will be their first time nominated for an Academy Award. Gossip Cop runs down 2016’s class of Oscar virgins. See photos below.
In the Best Actress field, there will be two new belles at the Oscar ball. First and foremost is Brie Larson, who many are calling this year’s frontrunner for her powerful performance in Room. But can the 26-year-old beat out veteran Charlotte Rampling, who also turned in an equally powerful performance in 45 Years for her first nomination?
The Best Actor category has one newcomer with Bryan Cranston. The 59-year-old Hollywood vet is no stranger to award shows, winning both Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for his role on “Breaking Bad.” Will his big screen turn in Trumbo earn him yet another accolade?
The Best Supporting Actress field has three newcomers vying for the win. Rachel McAdams is a first-timer for Spotlight. Alicia Vikander nabbed her first nod for The Danish Girl. And while Quentin Tarintino’s The Hateful Eight was passed over by the Academy for several categories, Jennifer Jason Leigh scored her first nomination for one of her grittiest roles to date.
The Best Supporting Actor category has two men competing for the little golden guy. Tom Hardy earned his first nomination, playing opposite fellow nominee Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant. Meanwhile, Mark Rylance, known mostly for his work on the stage, caught the Academy’s eye with his Bridge of Spies role.
The Best Original song category also has three notable virgins. Lady Gaga, who stunned the crowd last year with her tribute to Julie Andrews, is nominated for “Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground. Sam Smith is a newbie, scoring a nod for “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre. And The Weeknd whipped up a nomination for his Fifty Shades of Grey song, “Earned It.” See photos of all the Oscar virgins below!
