Oprah Winfrey Buys Dad’s Barber Shop

Oprah just bought her dad’s Nashville barber shop in a foreclosure sale.

The talk show legend purchased Vernon Winfrey’s store after he and his wife Barbara (Oprah’s stepmother) were unable to pay back the bank on the property.

They bought and renovated the new building last year, moving Vernon’s 50-year barber business into the location.

Thanks to Oprah’s intervention, her father will now be able to “continue to manage the business on a day-to-day basis,” according to a spokesperson for Oprah.

But Barbara Winfrey, whom Vernon filed to divorce on Tuesday, is not happy.

She says Oprah “doesn’t care about the community” and expresses concern that Vernon Winfrey is not fully aware of the decisions he’s making.

    My question is why is her fathers property going into forclosure and his daughter is a billionare??? Obviously there is a problem there!

    Barbara Winfrey is concerned, because now she’s out of any share of his business, now that Oprah owns it. Smart move on Oprah’s part. She can gift the business back to her father after the divorce is final. If Oprah didn’t care about her dad, she would never have done this. I am sure over the years her dad has told her, he doesn’t want her money. Which is not a bad thing for both of them.

    Why would she wait for it to go into foreclosure and not pay the bills when things got bad. It could not have been that much of a burden. I don’t even like my parents and I do not have to much money but I help out all the time with their finical burden. If I were rich I would have my parents out of debt and let them live the life style that they want, within reason.

    Ah, a voice of reason instead of someone looking to bash Oprah for not helping out sooner. How refreshing! It saddens me that people are so quick to bring out the negativity instead of considering that there may be perfectly good reasons for why things happen the way they do. Whether or not you like her, you can’t deny that Oprah is a smart businesswoman.

    She was smart to wait… her father is in the midst of a divorce and the soon to be ex-wife isn’t happy about Oprah purchasing the property…had Oprah helped him with the property while they were divorcing, the wife would have gotten something out of it and if the father had the property for 50 years (decades) then, he had that property prior to their marriage so why should she (ex-wife) get anything out of it. Oprah got the property at a foreclosed price which was less than what he owed (if she negotiated correctly), she will gift the property back to her father after the divorce and he will continue to run the business as he has in the past. Why after decades of owning the building/business is he in foreclosure? Something was going on with his finances and it smells like it was the soon to be ex. Smart move O.

    Perhaps you should look at his soon to be ex-wife, maybe she has something to do with the finance troubles. And maybe he refused to take any money from his daughter before.

    Why would Vernon Wifnrey not be aware of the decision he’s making & why does she care so much since they’re divorcing? I agree with others, she’s mad she won’t get any of it now that Oprah owns it. Great job on Oprah’s part.

    Oprah is a saint for rescuing her father in spite of the fact that he has not been the best father to her. He had contempt for O’s mother and he had the same contempt for his daughter.

    First, Vernon berated O her for getting pregnant and SHAMING THE FAMILY. This after abandoning his own pregnant lover (O’s mom) and child and shaming both families by not marrying the mom.

    Then, he starts to work on a book about O behind her back in 2007. When she initially caught wind of it, she did not believe that her father would do it, but when O contacted him, all he could say was, “I meant to tell you”.

    Then, Vernon sold his story to KITTY KELLEY who wrote a book trashing O in 2010.
    He also stated doubt about whether or not he was REALLY Oprah’s father.

    Yet, he has been more than willing to take her money and continues to do so.

    He’s lucky to be getting one thin dime from O.

    Could the problem be Vernon Winfrey? From what I have read Oprah has done a lot for her parents and they still remain ungrateful. If you are having trouble running your business, get help. Going into foreclosure means payments have been missed. One report seemed to indicate he was listening to advice from the wrong sources. Whatever the problem may be, no child wants to be perceived as a bank.
