One Direction Celebrates Four Release With Today Concert in Orlando (VIDEOS)
One Direction celebrated the release of their new album Four on Monday with a “Today Show” concert at Universal Studios Orlando in Florida. Noticeably absent, however, was Zayn Malik, who was said to be suffering from a “tummy bug,” and was unable to make the trip to Orlando. Check out the videos below for the full explanation and all the performances.
But it was still “on with the show!” and the band performed at the resort center’s Citywalk, where thousands of fans stood not only directly in front the stage, but also behind it, separated by a lagoon. Those Directioners initially didn’t have the best angle, but the guys made sure to turn around while performing to show them a little love. Niall Horan tweeted before the show, “This is a great day already! can’t believe our album is out ! like 5000 people here at universal, our fans are the best ! @TODAYshow.”
It was more like 15,000 people. Matt Lauer and Al Roker were on hand to greet and interview the guys, and they went on to perform new songs such as “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes,” as well as old favorites including “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Little Things” and “Best Song Ever.” Of the new material, Louis Tomlinson told Lauer, “I think we’ve tried to make our music move with us a little bit, as we’ve gotten a little bit older and each album gets a little bit older.” And Harry Styles noted, “It’s exciting and nervous at the same time. I think this is the album we’re most proud of.”
Liam Payne said of Malik being MIA, “We only found out this morning so we’re really sad, he is as well, that he can’t be here for our album release.” Lauer pressed Payne further, citing “rumors of substance of abuse,” but the singer insisted that it was nothing more than a stomach bug. The timing of Malik’s illness isn’t great, since this is probably the most biggest week of the year for One Direction. As Gossip Cop has reported, anticipation for Four has been building for weeks, and the festivities are far from over. One Direction will have a private concert for 2,000 lucky fans on Tuesday, a performance that will be taped for their first-ever primetime U.S. TV special, slated to air on NBC on December 23.
