One Direction Meets Kate Middleton And Prince William — SEE PHOTOS HERE!
A princess and prince met boy band royalty when Kate Middleton, Prince William and One Direction all attended the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium on Thursday. The charity event, essentially a variety show, takes place each year as a family-friendly gala with members of the monarchy in attendance. Dating back to 1912, proceeds go to the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund. See the photos below!
One Direction was one of the 2014 performers, along with Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding and Bette Midler, plus the “Britain’s Got Talent” group Collabro. While Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwell, represented the royal family last year, Middleton and Prince William were the special guests this time around. This was their first appearance at the fancy event, which will be broadcast on ITV in December.
It was a big night for all in attendance, but particularly One Direction and Middleton. For the group, it was, of course, a huge honor to perform, and the event also coincided with 1D’s ongoing worldwide promotional activities for their new album Four, which will be released on Monday. As for Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge spent much of the fall battling severe morning sickness in the early stages of her second pregnancy. Middleton’s illness sidelined her for weeks, and she’s only just returned to her full royal duties.
Middleton, in a black lace Diane von Furstenberg dress, and the guys of One Direction (Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Tomlinson) met upon arriving at the event. She and Prince William took the time to speak with the group, and shake their hands. Styles told reporters after the introduction, “I said congratulations on the bump. [But] she didn’t look bumpy.” Prince William reportedly told 1D he’d been “keeping a close eye” on them, and Payne admitted afterward, “It’s the most nervous I think I’ve ever been in my life.” Tomlinson, meanwhile, reportedly worried that he didn’t greet Middleton properly because he didn’t say “ma’am.” “I said, ‘Hi. How are you? I’m Louis,'” said the singer, prompting Payne to quip, “So he’s off to a bad start.”
Both of them later took to Twitter to comment on the event, with Tomlinson tweeting, “Coolest part of today… Prince William asked how Donny Rovers were doing!! Ha love it! Come on @drfc_official!” And Payne wrote, “Such a huge day today. Was so nervous but I’m so blessed to meet some amazing people.” Check out the photos below!
