Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have settled their lawsuit with former interns, Gossip Cop has learned. According to paperwork filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, the Olsen twins will pay out $530 to each of the 185 former interns who were part of a class action against their parent company Dualstar Entertainment. They will also cover an additional $41,950 for the opposing side’s legal fees for a total settlement of $140,000.

As Gossip Cop reported in 2015, the Olsens were sued by Shahista Lalani, who worked as an intern for five months in 2012 at their fashion label The Row. Lalani, who didn’t receive college credit for her internship, alleged she toiled nearly 50 hours a week and was never paid a penny for her time and effort. In her initial court filing, Lalani said the work was “very demanding,” and her superiors were often “mean.”

“I’d see a lot of kids crying doing coffee runs, photocopying stuff,” she claimed in her lawsuit. She also stated in her court filing that she had to be hospitalized once for dehydration, noting she “carried like 50 pounds worth of trench coats,” and “it was like 100 degrees outside.” Most significantly, Lalani alleged she was doing the same work as paid employees at Dualstar Entertainment, including organizing the office, sewing, inputting data, photocopying, and doing personal errands for staffers.

Gossip Cop is told the Olsen sisters decided to settle the lawsuit because it was expedient. If they had lost the class action suit, it potentially could have cost them far more in damages and in legal fees. Ultimately, we’re told, the $140,000 settlement, should it be approved by the judge, was thought to be a “good deal.”
