‘Ocean’s Eight’ Backlash: Fans Slam Female Reboot Cast Announcement
The cast of Ocean’s Eight, the upcoming all-female reboot of Ocean’s Eleven, was announced on Wednesday. But fans of the original franchise are now slamming the movie on Twitter. See fan reactions and backlash below.
Ocean’s Eight is a combination of a reboot, sequel and spinoff to the George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon-led trilogy about a group of thieves pulling off major heists. Sandra Bullock leads the new cast as the ex-con sister of Clooney’s character, Danny Ocean, while Cate Blanchett co-stars in a role similar to the one played by Pitt. Warner Bros. has now announced that the five additional actresses joining the team are Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and rapper/comedienne Awkwafina. The eighth member of the group has yet to be announced.
Naturally, the movie is being compared to the recent all-female Ghostbusters reboot, which received a ton of backlash for having women taking over roles originated by men. One person on Twitter wrote, “Ocean’s 8 will do as well as the Ghostbuster’s reboot,” pointing to that film’s disappointing box office. Another user said, “I don’t think sexy women will save a horrible script in a genre appealing mainly to men. Ocean’s 8 will bomb harder than Ghostbusters.”
One person asked, “Who approves these scripts. forced female movies, with terribly unbalanced casts. why?” And another also questioned, “Why would I watch ‘Ocean’s 8’ with an all-female cast? Gonna be trash.” A fan of the original joked, “Ocean’s Eleven will always be greater than Ocean’s 8, even if it’s just by mathematics.”
Noting that Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack first starred in a 1960 version of the film, one person tweeted, “Ocean’s 8 will be the remake of a remake. It epitomizes a lazy and cash-grab mentality in Hollywood.” Another person similarly expressed, “Oh hey, Ocean’s 8. Another reboot with a female cast because, Hollywood can’t think of something creative or original for a change.”
“Hollywood’s originality is lost! Stop rebooting great movies as crappy all-female ones! (Ghostbusters). Create something original,” bemoaned one user, while another joked, “Ocean’s 8 reboot w/ all female cast will b just as disastrous as Ghostbusters… unless they all get naked!” Another person added, “Ocean’s 8: all female reboot of Ocean’s 11. Another movie we didn’t ask for, feminists.” And one fan said, “At what point are Feminist going to realize female centered reboots are sexist?” Although there were some other Twitter users excited about the prospect of an all-female Ocean’s Eleven reboot, the majority of comments were similar to the negative ones above.
