NSYNC Was Never SUPPOSED To Reunite For SNL, Despite Rumors
Despite intense speculation ahead of the show, NSYNC did NOT reunite on stage at Sunday’s “SNL 40: Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary” special. And they were never SUPPOSED to have reunited for a performance.
When it was revealed that the beloved boy band had been asked to attend the big TV event, many outlets (and fans) presumed frequent “SNL” host Justin Timberlake (who opened the show with Jimmy Fallon) would be joined by his old friends JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass and Joey Fatone for a reunion performance. Rumors (and hopes) were fueled by a Saturday tweet from NSYNC: “Together again… Gee, it’s good to be together again #SNL40.”
Since their split more than a decade ago, the group had only performed at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards to commemorate Timberlake’s acceptance of the Video Vanguard Award. So the news of a possible performance on Sunday’s “SNL” spectacular took off on social media. But it was based on… nothing. NBC never said NSYNC would perform, and neither did NSYNC. In fact, Bass tweeted before the show on Sunday, “For the record , we are not performing or doing a skit tonight on SNL. But look hard for us in he audience! Fun night ahead! #SNL40.”
And indeed, while Bass, Fatone and Kirkpatrick were on hand for the festivities, that was the extent of their participation. Fans may have been disappointed, but they shouldn’t have been led astray by outlets like Us Weekly, which declared on Saturday that NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys would reunite for “SNL.” There’s some history here. Last year, NSYNC played an April Fools’ Day prank on fans, spreading a fake story claiming they’d be putting out a new album and going on tour. Beware of any future NSYNC reunion rumors.
