Nina Dobrev Vampire Diaries Finale Goodbye

Nina Dobrev said goodbye to Elena, her character on “The Vampire Diaries,” with Thursday’s season finale. See photos (and spoilers!) below.

As Gossip Cop reported, Dobrev confirmed last month that she’s leaving the beloved CW series after six seasons. The actress opted not to renew her contact after fulfilling her six-year deal, explaining she wanted to explore new opportunities. While the news was a shock to fans, Dobrev had already told producers of her desired exit quite some time in advance.

Before her final episode even began airing, #GoodbyeElena” was a trending topic. Dobrev was active on social media all day, “counting down” to her farewell, but especially as the show aired, during which she posted “throwback” pictures from her years filming the series. Dobrev shared a picture from the pilot in which she’s posing with “The Vampire Diaries” creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, writing, “I owe it all to these two.”

She went on to write to fans, “And I COULD NOT do it without all of you. Thank you so much for all the love and positivity from you unbelievably passionate and amazing fans. Your support means more to me than I will ever be able to express with words.”

So, what happened to Elena? After Kai cast a sleeping spell on her, an unconscious Elena dreamt of final moments with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley), and more, as her loved ones tried to find a cure. Unable to heal Elena without killing Bonnie, everyone gathered to say their goodbyes as she lay in a casket. In the visions with each friend and family member, Elena encouraged her pals to keep diaries, so that when one day when she is able to wake up, she can catch up one everyone’s lives.

Damon later hid the casket in the Salvatore family tomb, and gave a tearful goodbye to “the love of [his] life.” Elena asked him, “Are you ready for this?” “Ready to spend the next 60 years of my life without you?” Damon replied. “Who’s ever ready for that?” But as Elena is not actually dead, it seems like the door is open for Dobrev to make an appearance sometime in the future, perhaps when the show, which will return for its seventh season this fall, has its eventual series finale. Fear not, Stelena and Delena shippers! You may eventually get a happy ending after all. For now, grab some tissues, and check out the pictures below.
