While some may be running from Tiger Woods these days, the sportswear giant Nike isn’t among them.
Nike is standing by Woods, even during his “indefinite break” from golf, a result of an avalanche of infidelity allegations.
The sporting goods company stated, “Tiger has been part of Nike for more than a decade. He is the best golfer in the world and one of the greatest athletes of his era. We look forward to his return to golf,” adding, “He and his family have Nike’s full support.”
Late yesterday, Woods, who had remained silent while his growing number of alleged mistresses hit the airwaves and granted interviews to newspapers and magazines, issued another statement in which he said, “I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.” He then announced, “I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.”
To date, his wife Elin Nordegren, has yet to publicly utter a word.
Since the scandal erupted two weeks ago, Gatorade said it was going to drop its Tiger Focus drink, and Gillette announced it was “limiting his role in [their] marketing programs.”
Woods, up until now, earned approximately $100 million a year from tournament play and endorsements.
Gossip Cop would like to know if you think the “repair[ing] the damage I’ve done” comment he made in yesterday’s statement is his desire to just fix his personal failings or also his public persona.
