While giving an empowering speech about women going after their dreams, Kidman revealed that she had once turned down an opportunity to be in director Jane Campion’s 1984 student film, A Girls Own Story. “I am horrified to report that I passed on the part she offered me. My excuse was that I had final exams to study for, but the truth is the part would have required me to appear up on screen wearing a shower cap and kissing a girl,” explained Kidman, adding, “I wanted to be the kind of actress with long flowing hair [who] kissed boys.”

The actress went on to say that she wasn’t “ready to do the kind of work that threatened anybody,” but now she “know[s] better.” Grabbing a shower cap, Kidman noted, “I say, ‘Jane, if you’re out there… I’m ready to don this cap.'” The movie star then continued her speech and asked the audience to “pledge together today to be there for that girl, to support her artistically, emotionally [and] financially.” She added, “Let us create opportunities for her and teach her to manage that inner voice that is trying so hard everyday to hold her back. Let us show her that she is strong, smart and talented, and she deserves every part that might interest her and at equal pay, too.”

At the conclusion of her speech, Kidman and Watts, who was on stage with her, both put on shower caps and kissed each other as the crowd cheered. Kidman was receiving the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film, presented to her by Watts, who is a longtime close friend. See pictures below.
