Nicki Minaj Slams VMAs Nominations, Seemingly Throws Shade At Taylor Swift
As Gossip Cop reported earlier, the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, and Minaj received two nods: One for Best Female Video and another for Best Hip-Hop Video. Both were for “Anaconda,” while “Feeling Myself,” her collaboration with Beyoncé, was completely shut out. Minaj went on a Twitter rant to express her frustration, complaining that “Feeling Myself” was ignored, and questioning why that clip and”Anaconda” didn’t get Video of the Year nominations.
At first Minaj seemed humbled and genuinely confused, tweeting “Hey guys
@MTV thank you for my nominations. Did Feeling Myself miss the deadline or…?” But the rapper, after retweeting messages from fans’ who were also questioning the apparent “Anaconda” snub, got a little more pointed when she wrote, “U couldn’t go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween…an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?”
Minaj also tweeted what many have interpreted as a diss against Swift, whose “Bad Blood” was nominated for Video of the Year, along with six other categories. Minaj wrote, “When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination.” She further said another post, “If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.”
“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” Minaj later wrote. She added, “Oh but trust me. I’ll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda.”
While Minaj never mentioned Swift by name, she’s the only “other girl” to be nominated for Video of the Year, aside from Beyoncé, who was nominated for “7/11 .” As Gossip Cop previously noted, Swift leads this year’s nominees with nine nods in all. Gossip Cop reached out to MTV for clarification on Minaj’s submission deadline question, but did not immediately hear back.
