Nicki Minaj: I Did NOT Slam Kanye West Over “Gold Digger” Lyrics
Marie Claire recently released its November 2016 cover story on Minaj. In the interview, she’s quoted as saying, “I’m so tired of black women feeling that when our men get rich, they’re going to leave them for a woman of a different race. It wasn’t funny when Kanye said, ‘When he get on, he’ll leave your ass for a white girl’ — and Kanye happens to be with a white girl now. It wasn’t funny when he said it; it was the f*cking truth.”
Many outlets inaccurately interpreted Minaj’s comment as a dig against the rapper. “Nicki Minaj Tears Into Kanye West For ‘Gold Digger’ Song,” said HollywoodLife. Us Weekly stated, “Nicki Minaj Slams Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’ Lyrics.” And Cosmopolitan declared, “Nicki Minaj Slams Kanye West Over ‘Gold Digger’ Lyrics.”
That last one caught Minaj’s attention on Monday, and she made it clear all those publications had the story wrong. “‘Slams’ a man/genius who gave me one of the biggest looks of my career? I said he wasn’t kidding, he was speaking the TRUTH about d industry,” the performer tweeted.
Minaj went on to further clarify, “I was saying he’s the one who said it first. He doesn’t apologize for his choices. He tells the truth about stuff ppl don’t wanna hear!” And that means she was actually praising West, NOT dissing or slamming him.
