Nicki Minaj Congratulates Zendaya By Showing Off Her Own Barbie (PHOTO)
As Gossip Cop reported, a Barbie doll modeled after Zendaya’s likeness, specifically her dreadlocks look from the Oscars, was unveiled on Saturday. It was heralded as a gift to black children, an effort for the classic toy to appear a little more inclusionary. But Minaj wants everyone to know she got her own Barbie first.
In an Instagram post showing off the Barbie doll made for her in 2011, Minaj wrote, “Congrats on your doll, Zendaya! Did u know Barbie made me one a cpl years back? It was such an honor & a HUGE surprise.” The rapper continued, “Anyway, I love your doll’s hair! I love what it means for other little girls who will identify with it & be empowered. Continue to be proud of yourself girls!!!!! #Barbie.”
Minaj went on to a post a side-by-side photo of her doll with Zendaya’s (see above), writing, “@zendaya They should have matching bff Barbie cars with the dreamhouse to match. Love this.” But the performer’s comments weren’t interpreted as genuine. Instead, Minaj was accused of trying to steal Zendaya’s spotlight.
“So selfish of you to make it about you…. you have definitely lost a fan!” one person commented on Minaj’s post, which was filled with similar remarks. And even though Zendaya didn’t seem to mind Minaj’s posts, even tweeting to her, “representation is so important,” the rap star received some hate tweets, too. Minaj replied to Zendaya, “Yes ma’am! I love the statement they made. I love that smthn negative was turned into smthn so much greater for u.”
As Gossip Cop reported, Demi Lovato was also slammed for similar reasons this weekend. The pop star was blasted on social media after she sent a tweet suggesting a Barbie be made after her own body type. Lovato, too, was accused of being jealous of Zendaya, though she’s actually been campaigning for such a doll since at least 2013, as Gossip Cop reported at the time.
