Nicki Minaj: My Abortion “Haunted Me All My Life”
Nicki Minaj opens up in the latest issue of Rolling Stone about making the difficult decision to have an abortion as a teenager. In the interview, Minaj candidly reveals that her choice to terminate her pregnancy when she was in high school continues to haunt her today.
Minaj says she was attending New York ‘s famous performing-arts high school, LaGuardia, and dating an older guy from Queens when she found out she was pregnant. “I thought I was going to die,” she recalls. “I was a teenager. It was the hardest thing I’d ever gone through.” Although Minaj says having an abortion was the right decision for her at the time, she notes, “[It] haunted me all my life. It’d be contradictory if I said I wasn’t pro-choice. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have anything to offer a child.”
The singer first rapped about having an abortion and the guilt she felt afterwards in her 2008 song “Autobiography.” Minaj also references the painful experience in “All Thing Go” on her new album The Pinkprint.
Minaj says she wanted to be more open with her feelings on her latest record. “One of my goals was to give people a glimpse into my personal life, because it’s something I’ve kept very private,” she explains. Minaj, who recently ended her 11-year relationship with Safaree Samuels, adds in the interview that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to share with the entire world the pain she had felt. “I had to learn to do something as simple as sleep alone,” she says. “I struggled with ‘Do I express these feelings?’ And I decided there’s no reason for me to hide. I’m a vulnerable woman, and I’m proud of that.”
She further tells the music magazine that she wants women to be smart as well as sexy. “With a video like ‘Anaconda,’ I’m a grown-ass f*cking woman!” she says. “I stand for girls wanting to be sexy and dance, but also having a strong sense of themselves. If you got a big ol’ butt? Shake it! Who cares? That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be graduating from college.” What do you think of Minaj’s comments?
