Nick Santino, Soap Opera Actor, Kills Himself in Grief After Euthanizing Dog

Truth rating: 10

(NY Post)

A struggling soap opera actor named Nick Santino killed himself this week after euthanizing his beloved dog.

On Wednesday, police discovered Santino, dead of a deliberate drug overdose, only hours after the devastated actor put his pit bull Rocco to sleep.

“Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend,” Santino wrote in his suicide note. “Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”

It appears that Santino felt he had no option but to euthanize the pit bull amid complaints from his Manhattan apartment building, which banned the breed but had allowed Rocco to stay under a set of strict rules.

The upsetting story was first reported by the New York Post.

According to the newspaper, Santino, who made appearances on shows including “All My Children” and “Guiding Light,” adopted Rocco from a shelter several years ago.

In recent months, the depressed actor reportedly felt more and more pressure from his building’s management and neighbors to get rid of the pit bull.

It’s not entirely clear why Santino felt euthanizing Rocco was his only choice, but he did so on Tuesday, which happened to be the actor’s 47th birthday.

Santino then ended his own life.

The remains of both pet and owner are to be cremated.

How terribly lonely he must have been.

    OMG This made me cry!

  • Chris R

Sad that he thought that was his only option.

  • Danny

Aw, that’s so sad. They can both be together now. Happy.

  • SatanicPromQueen

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I’m sure there will be people rolling their eyes because it was “just a dog” but as a “mom” to a pit myself, I imagine it would be like watching your child pass away. Add to that the guilt of making that choice and ongoing issues & the outcome is no surprise.

Poor guy :( I hope his neighbors feel shitty right now.

  • Jaded28

I feel for the guy on the one hand, but to seriously think that was his only option is ridiculous. I’m referring to both his suicide and his euthanizing his dog. My first thought would have been working on moving to place that is not so hostile to his pet. Or just telling the neighbors to suck it up. Or even finding another home for his dog.
I hate to be that mean person but it seems that his choices were very selfish. I am very sad for what his family must be going through.

  • Mel

    That is so freaking sad!

  • Lovessports4ever

RIP Nick and Rocco. I hope you find the peace you never had in life.

  • Woody McBreairty

I wonder if this poor guy intended to commit suicide & took the dog with him. Otherwise the whole scenario makes no sense to me. Maybe he did it this way to try to avoid the connotation of “disgrace” that usually accompanies suicide. Seems there were/are so many options in a case like this, that I cannot believe there is not more to the story than meets the eye – or the ear. Sad and touching in any case.

  • Woody McBreairty

I agree. I think probably the man was suicidal anyway and this was an excuse for softening the blow, but I think it was made even sadder.

  • MyKinKStar

It’s sad he didn’t find other solutions for his dog and for himself too. He could have moved; or found a new home for his dog elsewhere, if only temporarily. May they find peace now, together again, on the other side.

Breed Specific Legislation Is Wrong! BSL SUX.

  • Linda

this is SO sad. He should have found another way instead of euthanizing his dog. I wonder how heartless the people in his building really were, I wonder how they feel now that he ended it all :(

  • NYC2Long

Yes is NYC buildings with harsh pet regulations people can be very heartless, this is so utterly sad, RIP

  • Priscilla52782

Heartbreaking. RIP now Nick and Rocco.

pit bulls are not born mean. bad owners make them mean. punish the deed, not the breed. i adore my pit bulls and would kill for them just like i would for my kids. they’re my babies too.

  • Sara

This is so sad, but more then likely this guy was very suicidal in the first place. You don’t just kill yourself on the spur of the moment. This is something that he had probably planned, very sad will never understand suicide.

  • Hell

“they can be together now” really?!? Sorry but NOPE not happening they’re not together now or ever. Suicide is a sin people need to rethink killing themselves.

  • Dozie

am so sorry but this is so stupid of him killing your self, and your own dog, doesn’t make sense at all.

  • http://thecraftyangel.blogspot.com The Crafty Angel

So very sad and tragic, for everyone involved :*( I hope they are both at peace, and that the family is given strength to deal with this terrible loss.

  • Kris

So true! Proper training and a loving home make beautiful dogs regardless of breed.

  • Mandy

Let’s hope that this incredibly sad story makes landlords and heartless neighbors everywhere rethink these bans on pets. Enough perfectly healthy pets get put to sleep. Where is the love? I know Nick and Rocco will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

I hope those freakin neighbors are happy now. They forced this man to euphanize his dog, so he could have a place to live. Then, he realized with the little work he must be getting and the depression he was feeling, he felt life was not worth living. He must have felt very guilty to have to put the dog down because of the property management and the pit bull regulations. He did what was best for him. He probably did not have enough money to move and his dog was his only and best friend. I had to do the same thing with my older cat. I felt like I murdered him even though he was very old. I am so sorry.

  • Rosalita

    I agree with you too.

  • Nakity nak

Losing a dog is never easy especially if you treat it as family.

This whole crap on breeding & banning pit bull are stupid. If the authorities are worried, do a breeding registration where you send someone to check up on the dog’s behaviour after a month of adopting/buying followed by a 6 month follow up every year till they see that the dog is no menace to society. It’s basically the same as a social worker.

It’s a sad world when it’s the animal who gets punished rather then the owners who abused it.

I’ve met some of the sweetest pit bulls and they would never harm a person.

  • PeaceWithYou

I really hope the neighbors learn a thing or two about the breed. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner. I swear, some people are absolutely clueless! I am the proud mother of a rescued pit who lays at my feet as we speak. He is the sweetest animal I have ever known even though the first few years of his life were spent being kicked, chained, and starved. I really hope Rocco and Mr. Santino find peace in their after lives.

  • Whocares

What is wrong with you? Did you not even read what the article is about? You are NOT a beautiful woman – you are a disgusting slut.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MaverickSF Sean Bulmer

WOW! How nice to read such kind and empathetic comments. This is heartbreaking and to a certain extent, I can understand. The guilt probably ate him up as well- which any true dog owner can tell you. In these uncertain times, its been our pets that have been so wonderful and good to us. Funny, mine actually “saved” my life. BTW_ great site! Just found it. And I doubt the people that comment on YAHOO! would be anywhere near as kind. ;O)

  • http://twitter.com/Addicted_2_Junk Addicted 2 Junk

The guy killed himself because he had emotional problems. He didn’t have to put this dog to sleep. He could have abided by the building rules which probably meant a muzzle on the dog in public places, he could have moved, he could have found the dog another home.
Let’s not blame the dog for what this man did. The fact that he did it on his birthday is another sign of instability. I feel bad for him, obviously the man felt all alone but it was not about the dog.
I have two dogs myself that I love more than anything. If I felt the need to kill myself I’d find them good homes first and then off myself. This was just selfish.

  • UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!

If the dog hadn’t attacked anyone or wasn’t vicious, I just don’t understand why people feel this way about certain breeds of dogs. ANY dog can be trained to be mean. Just because this dog was a pit bull doesn’t automatically make him mean. I hope the people in the building feel real safe now that BOTH the dog and Nick are gone. I agree with Dakota. Too bad the dog and Nick are gone and not the people in the apartment!!!!

  • sooz

Nick was given up for adoption and bounced from foster home to foster home. He had a really tough life from early on. There was more going on here than the lost of his beloved pup. Sad as it is, his problems ran much deeper than his neighbors not liking his pet. I hope he finally finds some peace.

Sooz, thank you for giving us some insight on this very tragic story. This is totally heartbreaking. I knew there must be more to the story. I am so sorry he thought this was the only way out. Pits are wonderful dogs, and I do blame the condo person(s) for pushing him over the edge. RIP Nick and Rocco.

I think anyone who is that depressed and thinking about killing themselves should take a walk around a cancer ward or a childerns cancer ward and see how hard they are fighting to stay alive while they are ploting to take their own

No use getting upset by those loser types, just flag the comment and hopefully it will be removed.

The fact is PitBulls are loyal to a fault. They will Do Anything for their master, including fight to their death. This BEAUTIFUL trait should be enjoyed and praised, because all they desire for their duty to man is a pat on their head. Instead, their absolute and total desire to do good has been exploited by a FEW a’holes who use/abuse for their fun/fame/fortune. It’s sickening the dogs are punished or killed and not seen as anything but WONDERFUL creatures, because those who cause them harm are the bad ones, deserving of punishment.

  • Anonymous

I agree, but I think once a person comes to the point where suicide is an option, they have likely gone too far into the brink. Not that they can’t be saved, but the secrecy of that depth keeps anyone from knowing they need help.

  • Anonymous

I euthanized my cat. She was very sick and felt bad and it was hard to watch how she was suffering. Bad things happen. Sometimes. You can do nothing with it. Now I have a dog and I know she will die after five or ten years, but I have a good friend at the moment. People have to take this as it is.

  • Anonymous

It’s a big difference when you ‘put down’ an elder animal or one that is sick, to one that is being killed simply because of what breed they are and not even because of anything this particular dog did. This dog was euthanized for no good reason!

  • Anonymous

You think the good reason makes it easier? No, it doesn’t. Even if he would euthanized his dog by a good reason, it wouldn’t keep him alive. It was a huge lost for him.

  • Echo10100

They usually aren’t so kind. You caught them on a good day.

  • genxgina

this is just really sad, nobody should be judging what they don’t understand. obviously, there was more going on here. this guy was troubled and the problem with the neighbors apparently sent him over the edge. he felt he had no choice. of course he did have choices, but he didn’t see it that way. people that aren’t emotionally troubled or mentaly ill might not get it, but they shouldn’t be quick to judge what they can’t understand. sad…R.I.P. to Nick and his dog. :(

  • Ker2

    What. The fuck.

  • Luckyirish74

as sad as this is wouldnt it have been easier if you loved the dog so much to either move(especially since you werent working but still spending alot to live in nyc) or give the dog to a loved one you trusted so you sould still see it? if you follow this pattern what happens if his parents didnt like his girlfriend …..

i am very sad to read this article, i literally cant bear to imagine what had he felt when he decided to end up both his and dog life.
First of all,,,,,i hope that lady an all those people who pressured him to such extreme decision would boil in hell!!!!!i really hope they will.
Second of all,,,,,if i have been in the same situation i would tell them to F.U, or i would simply move out! I could never kill my dog, especially because some stupid apartment!

  • Jboyer2

    go fuck yourself.

  • Ouachita59

do you know any other words?

  • Anonymous

He could have found a different place to live, instead of putting his dog to sleep. I think he was suicidal, and wanted his dog to be with him in the afterlife. Suicide is a selfish act, and to take another life along with your own is even more selfish. Over the years, I have lost friends to suicide.
One said it was because of Debt in a note. One did not leave a note, but did it just hours after their child’s 4th birthday party. One did it (as said in a note) for revenge against an ex. Yes, they were depressed (obviously). However, it was selfish, and they were only thinking about themselves. Not taking into consideration what it would do to their friends, and parents, and children and spouses. So while it is sad another suicide has been committed. I am more angry that it was a suicide that could have been prevented.
