Nick Fradiani took a big step towards the “American Idol” finale after wowing with his performances on Wednesday’s Top 3 night. Check out the videos below!

As Gossip Cop has reported, Fradiani has emerged as a dark horse over the last few weeks. The singer found himself unable to stand out from the pack in the beginning of the live episodes, but took the judges’ feedback each week and steadily improved. In fact, as Gossip Cop noted, Jennifer Lopez told him last week that he was “peaking” at the exact right time in the competition. That stride continued throughout three rounds tonight.

For the first round, in which this season’s mentor Scott Borchetta selected Bruce Springsteen’s “Because the Night,” Fradiani caused such cheers that Harry Connick Jr. couldn’t speak at first. He went on to call the performance “fantastic” and “strong,” and Keith Urban thought it greatly showed off his tone. Lopez, however, encouraged Fradiani to connect with the lyrics more, much like she advised Clark Beckham after his first performance of the night.

The second round was a Hometown Dedication, inspired by Fradiani’s return to Guilford, Connecticut last weekend. The “Idol” hopeful performed “Back Home” by Andy Grammer, prompting Lopez to praise him for “getting better and better.” Connick said a critique wasn’t even warranted, and instead told Fradiani, “All I could help to think about is about how you almost didn’t audition that day and I’m sure glad you did because that was very strong again.” The judge was recalling the contestant’s memorable try-out, in which he entered the competition at the last minute after accompanying his girlfriend, who didn’t even make the cut after her audition.

In the third and final round, Fradiani closed the show with Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be,” as selected by the judges. Urban gave him a brief standing ovation, the only one of the entire night, and said it would be a “hit” if it was the singer’s original song. Connick also said he “nailed” it, and Lopez called it “perfect.” She added, “It’s like five weeks ago you decided, ‘Hey, I can win this!’…Throw out the nerves, throw out everything, go! You’re going!”

Connick later said Fradiani won that round, topping competitors Beckham, Jax, and Rayvon Owen, who wast later eliminated. Fradiani safely made it into the Top 3 with Beckham and Jax, but whether he makes the Top 2, however, won’t be revealed until the first night of next week’s season finale.
