Nicholas Sparks and his wife Cathy have separated after 25 years of marriage. The famous novelist announced their split on Tuesday in a statement. “Cathy and I have separated,” he said. “This is, of course, not a decision we’ve made lightly.”

Sparks continued, “We remain close friends with deep respect for each other and love for our children. For our children’s sake, we regard this as a private matter.” The couple wed in 1989 and have five children together: three sons and twin daughters. The two also founded the progressive Epiphany School in North Carolina through the Nicholas Sparks Foundation.

The author has written 17 novels about love and romance, many of which were turned into movies, including The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, and Dear John.
