Nelly Pleads Guilty To Marijuana Possession, But No Jail Time (VIDEO)
Nelly pleaded guilty to marijuana possession on Friday, but will not serve any jail time. See video below.
As Gossip Cop reported, the rapper was arrested in Tennessee in April after a traffic stop while traveling on his tour bus. After a search of the vehicle, he was taken into custody on charges of felony possession of drugs, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond.
At the time, Nelly’s lawyer insists the drugs, specifically ecstasy, did not belong to him. Indeed, he ultimately did not have to deal with the felony drug charge, as it was dropped by the prosecution. Instead, Nelly entered a guilty plea to just misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
At the hearing, the music star’s attorney successfully argued that, as a first-time offender, he should be accepted into the pretrial diversion program. That will allow Nelly to have the conviction wiped from his record provided he stay out of trouble for the next year while on 11 months of probation. If he doesn’t, though, he could face additional consequences.
Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes, said to Nashville’s News Channel 5 outside court afterward, “I think exactly what happened is exactly what we thought would happen, and Tennessee is a great place and I love it.” He also retweeted a News Channel 5 a journalist who happily posted about meeting him. The performer responded, “Pleasure meeting you.”
