Nelly Arrested For Felony Drug Possession: Police Find Meth, Marijuana And Guns
Nelly was arrested on felony drug charges after a traffic stop outside Nashville on Saturday.
The rapper and his entourage were traveling by bus when the vehicle was stopped by the Tennessee Highway Patrol around 9:20 a.m. local time because the bus did not have a Department of Transportation and International Fuel Tax Association sticker on display. But when officers approached the bus, they allegedly smelled marijuana, and conducted a search of the vehicle. Police say that led to the discovery of not just marijuana, but also five rocks that tested positive for meth.
In addition, the troopers say they found drug paraphernalia and a number of handguns. Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes, was taken into custody on charges of felony possession of drugs, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The performer was held at the Putnam County Jail until posting a $10,000 bond. He is due to appear in court on June 19.
Nelly’s arrest came just hours after he performed at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina. The star retweeted several fan messages in advance of the concert, but has yet to make any mention of his arrest. He was traveling from the event to his native St. Louis when the traffic stop occurred. A lawyer for Nelly says the star is innocent, insisting that none of the drugs found were his, and that nearly 20 people had access to the bus prior to the police search. The attorney further claims that it was not meth discovered by the cops, but ecstasy.
Regardless, Nelly’s lawyer adamantly tells TMZ, “Nelly will not be associated with the contraband that was allegedly discovered. Gossip Cop will have updates.
