Neil Patrick Harris: Why I Turned Down American Horror Story
Neil Patrick Harris reveals why he turned down an offer to be on the first season of “American Horror Story” in a new SiriusXM interview, during which the just-announced Oscars host also discusses his early plans for next year’s Academy Awards.
The reason Harris decided not to do “American Horror Story” is that he and husband David Burtka had just finished playing a bickering couple in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, and their proposed roles on “AHS” would be too similar for comfort.
“The idea was that we would be a gay couple that, as it turns out, were murdered in this house, and our ghosts are around for the thing,” recalled Harris, who said that he felt weird about doing another antagonistic on-screen role with Burtka.
He explained, “We had just played ourselves as a couple not getting along, and I thought, ‘It just seems weird to do that twice, as individual actors to play a couple that hate each other twice. So I said ‘No,’ that we shouldn’t do it.”
