Craig Sager, the legendary NBA sideline reporter, died Thursday following a long battle with leukemia. He was 65. NBA stars are now reacting to the death of the iconic sports journalist. See the players’ reactions and tributes below.
Sager, who often wore colorful and over-the-top outfits, was best known for his mid-game interviews with coaches and players on TNT. “Craig Sager was a beloved member of the Turner family for more than three decades and he has been a true inspiration to all of us,” TNT president David Levy said in a statement. “There will never be another Craig Sager. His incredible talent, tireless work ethic and commitment to his craft took him all over the world covering sports.”
Shortly following the news of Sager’s passing, former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippin tweeted, “Craig Sager brought so much enthusiasm to the NBA game. But his fight to the end is what really impressed me. RIP to an inspiring man.” Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson said, “Rest In Peace Craig Sager… Thank you for all your kind words and for showing the true meaning of the word strength.” Meanwhile, L.A. Clippers point guard Jamal Crawford wrote, “RIP Craig Sager.. You will be remembered forever,” and his teammate Blake Griffin added, “The sports world lost a legend today. rest in peace Mr. Craig Sager.”
Celtics star Isaiah Thomas said, “Rest In Peace #CraigSager prayers go out to his family.” Charlotte Hornets player Nicolas Batum expressed, “RIP to the GREAT Craig Sager! You’ll be missed! #GameChanger.” Former Knick Baron Davis tweeted, “R.I.P Craig Sager !! You will always be with us You brought fans closer to the game in a fun way.. humanizing coaches, fashion, wit, LEGEND!”
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Tyus Jones offered, “RIP Craig Sager. You will truly be missed. Prayers go out to his family,” while his teammate Shabazz Muhammad added, “RIP to the great Craig Sager you will not be forgotten! #SagerStrong.” Brooklyn Nets star Jeremy Lin also stated, “RIP Craig Sager!! #gamechanger.”
Of course, many non-sports stars are mourning Sager, too. Justin Timberlake posted, “#RIPCraigSager You made basketball BETTER. There will never be another you. Prayers to your family and loved ones. -JT.” Larry King said, “Rest peacefully, #CraigSager. You were a remarkable person & you’ll be missed by many in the sporting world and beyond.” Samuel L. Jackson tweeted, “RIP Craig Sager. You always brought joy, on the sideline & in life!!”
